COLCHESTER, Vt. (September 9, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team defeated Saint Michael's, 3-1, to pick up its first Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) win of the season at Duffy Field on Friday evening.
Senior forward/midfielder Kelsey Mahoney (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) factored in to all three goals while goalkeepers Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) and Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) made six saves apiece to lead the Skyhawks.
Katie Murphy (Woodbridge, Conn./Amity Regional) opened the scoring for the Purple Knights in the 20th minute beating Hickey for her first goal of the season on assists from Teal Bryan (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) and Cassie Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) for a 1-0 lead.
Senior forward Alexandra Murphy (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) responded for Stonehill at the 31:20 mark finishing on a one-touch pass from Mahoney in the box for her fourth goal of the season. Renee Trudeau (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) also received an assist on the tally on a beautiful cross to Mahoney who one-touch passed the ball to Murphy for the score.
Tied 1-1 in the second half, Mahoney put the Skyhawks ahead in the 55th minute tipping home a cross from Trudeau at the doorstep of the goal past Saint Michael's goalkeeper Ashleigh Adams (Milton, Vt./Milton) for a 2-1 advantage.
Adams ended the game with four saves in net for the Purple Knights.
At 65:13, Mahoney notched her second goal of the evening to close out the contest on assists from Casey Mathews (Mattapoisett, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) and Hickey, her third marker of the season.
The Purple Knights outshout the Skyhawks, 18-13, and both teams were tied in corners at one.
Stonehill (3-1, 1-1 NE-10) returns to action on Sunday, September 11 at home against Adelphi University in a NE-10 match-up beginning at 1 p.m.
