Stonehill And UMass Lowell Play To Scoreless Draw In Double Overtime

Wheaton makes five saves in net for Skyhawks

EASTON, Mass. (September 14, 2011) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team and UMass Lowell played to a double-overtime 0-0 tie in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Wednesday evening at Skyhawk Field.

Sophomore goalkeeper Amy Wheaton (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) turned away five shots for her second shutout of the season while her counterpart, freshman Jane Hatzikonstantis (Tewksbury, Mass./Central Catholic), made two stops for her third clean sheet of the season.

The Skyhawks, currently ranked #8 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II East Regional poll, had their best shot at breaking up the scoreless tie at the very onset of the contest as freshman Renee Trudeau (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) collected a through-ball on the right side of the box and struck a shot just wide of the left post.

Junior midfielder Jenna Costa (Attleboro, Mass./Attleboro) just missed giving the River Hawks a lead late in the second half by redirecting a cross from the left side of the box directly off of the right post and out of play.

Hatzikonstantis and Wheaton both went untested in the pair of overtime sessions.

Both teams ended the game tied in shots at 12 apiece but UMass Lowell controlled play in the first half outshooting Stonehill 5-2. The Skyhawks switched gears in the second half with an 8-4 differential in shots. The River Hawks won the corners match-up, 5-3.

Stonehill (4-1-1, 2-1-1 NE-10) travels to Pace University in NE-10 Conference play on Saturday, September 17 for a 1 p.m. start. UMass Lowell (2-1-1, 1-0-2 NE-10), currently ranked #5 in the NSCAA Division II East Regional poll, hosts NE-10 opponent Adelphi University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
