NE10 QUARTERFINAL: #3 Volleyball Fights Past #6 Saint Anselm, 3-1

EASTON, Mass. (November 16, 2021) - Third-seeded Stonehill College, ranked No. 1 in the most recent NCAA Division II East Regional rankings, fought its way to a 3-1 (27-25, 24-26, 26-24, 25-23) triumph over No. 6-seed Saint Anselm College, ranked No. 10 in the region, in quarterfinal round action of the 2021 Northeast-10 Conference Volleyball Tournament inside Merkert Gymnasium tonight.

The Details

  • Stonehill advances to Friday's NE10 semifinal round, which will be hosted by top-seeded American International College, for a rematch with No. 2-seeded University of New Haven, ranked No. 3 in the region, in Springfield, Massachusetts, at 7:30 p.m. The Chargers advanced with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-17, 21-25, 25-15) decision over No. 7 Southern New Hampshire University in their quarterfinal match in West Haven, Connecticut, tonight.
  • Stonehill advances to the NE10 semifinal round for the second-straight season and 11th time in program history overall. The Skyhawk have qualified for the NE10 Tournament for the 25th time in program history overall, and will be seeking the first championship match appearance in program history this weekend.
  • Senior Abby Remick led a trio of Stonehill hitters with double-digit kills as she posted her 11th double-double of the season (15th career) with a match-high 16 kills and 11 digs, while adding a service ace and solo block on the night to score a team-best 18.0 points.

    Junior Molly Turner keyed the Stonehill attack with a career-high 25 assists, four digs and a service ace. Senior Lauren Wilke contributed 16 assists, seven digs and a season-high matching four service aces.
  • Senior Carly Russell totaled 14 digs, five aces and five assists for Stonehill, while classmate Shannon Burgess totaled 14 kills and three block assists. Junior Basia Peragine contributed 11 kills and three block assists.
  • Junior Lauren Casey led the way for Saint Anselm with 19.5 points, totaling 15 kills, 13 digs, two aces and four blocks (one solo), while classmate Michelle Henwood dished out 45 assists to go with ten digs and two aces.
  • The match was tight from start to finish with neither side leading by more than six points along the way. The contest featured 37 ties and 18 lead changes over the four sets, including 17 ties and ten lead changes in the first set alone.
  • Back-to-back kills from Remick had Stonehill on set point in the first with a two-point lead, but a Skyhawks hitting error, Saint Anselm ace and another attack error gave the Hawks set point (25-24). The Skyhawks fought back with a Burgess kill and then consecutive Hawks hitting errors to clinch the set.
  • Saint Anselm grabbed a quick early four-point cushion (5-1) in the second set, but Stonehill slowly chipped away, drawing even at 18-all after a Hawks hitting error. Wilke served up three straight aces for the lead and set point for Stonehill, but Saint Anselm scored the next four points, including three on Casey's serve after she ended the run with a kill, providing set point with an ace.
  • The third set was more of the same, with Stonehill grabbing the early advantage with a pair of four point cushions, but the score was deadlocked again at 20-20 after a Burgess kill. The Skyhawks had two set points, but kills from Casey and freshman Gabby Belcher pulled Saint Anselm level. Stonehill emerged from a timeout with a block from Peragine and sophomore Lauren McCloskey before Russell served up set point with an ace.
  •  Saint Anselm grabbed a match-high six point lead (9-3) in the fourth set after a Stonehill attack error, but Stonehill followed with an 8-2 run on the serve of Russell and Turner to pull even at 11-11. Neither team led by more than two the rest of the way with a Burgess kill putting the Skyhawks in front for good (23-22) before she combined with senior Clare Feeman for a block to pull Stonehill to match point. After a kill by junior Lois Dogbe, Stonehill was able to get match point with a Saint Anselm attack error.

Stonehill (21-8, 10-3 NE10) advances to the NE10 semifinals for the second-straight season, where it will face No. 2 New Haven (21-8, 10-3 NE10) at top-seeded American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts, on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The NE10 Championship will be in Springfield on Saturday at 5 p.m. Saint Anselm likely sees its season come to a close at 19-8 overall, including 9-4 in the NE10 finishing in a three-way tie for fourth in the NE10 standings.
