Volleyball Splits to Cap Redhawks Invitational

Skyhawks post 3-1 win over NE10 foe New Haven, tripped up by Daemen, 3-1

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (September 18, 2021) – Stonehill College capped its weekend at the Redhawks Invitational, hosted by Roberts Wesleyan College, with a split of its matches at Voller Athletic Center today.

Stonehill opened by rallying from a set down to defeat fellow Northeast-10 Conference member University of New Haven, 3-1 (22-25, 25-20, 25-22, 25-17), before dropping a 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-14, 25-16) decision to Daemen College. Senior Abby Remick earned a spot on the Redhawks Invitational All-Tournament first team, while junior Basia Peragine was selected to the All-Tournament second team by the participating coaches.

Remick averaged 3.38 kills, 2.50 digs and 0.25 blocks per set for Stonehill over its two matches today. Senior Carly Russell averaged 6.25 digs and 0.25 service aces per set for the day.

  • New Haven held off a late run to take the opening set, led by three kills and a solo block by senior Asiya Way.
  • Stonehill started its comeback by taking the second, using a key 9-2 run to open a 16-8 lead in the set on its way to the win, led by three kills each from Remick and Burgess.
  • Stonehill rallied from behind 22-19 to take the third set, scoring the final six points on Wilke's serve, as Remick delivered four kills in that run.
  • Stonehill finished off the win staking out a 16-9 lead in the fourth set, with Remick leading the way again with five kills and two blocks in the set.

  • After splitting the first two sets, Daemen took advantage of 17 Stonehill errors to win the third set.
  • Daemen used ten Stonehill errors and four kills and two blocks by Meyer to clinch the win in the fourth set. The Wildcats staked out a 6-1 lead in the set after a kill by junior Loren Alberts, and didn't look back.

Stonehill (5-5, 0-0 NE10) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts rival Bentley University for a non-conference match in Merkert Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
