Volleyball Notches Key NE10 Win at Adelphi, 3-2

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (October 30, 2021) - Stonehill College picked up its fourth-straight victory, and 13th in the last 14 matches with a key 3-2 win (17-25, 25-20, 25-13, 21-25, 18-16) over Adelphi University in Northeast-10 Conference volleyball action inside the Center for Recreation and Sports this afternoon.

The Details

  • The five-set victory was Stonehill's sixth of the season. The Skyhawks are 5-1 in five-setters in 2021, including a pair of NE10 victories.
  • Stonehill was led by 16 kills from senior Abby Remick, who also added 16 digs on the day. Senior Shannon Burgess finished with 15 kills and four total blocks. 
  • Senior Lauren Wilke and junior Molly Turner split the sets on the day with Wilke dishing out 30 assists, while Turner finished with 22. 
  • Adelphi took a late advantage in an evenly matched first set utilizing a 5-1 run to make it 17-11, capped by a Noelle Alberda kill to create the cushion the Panthers needed for a 25-17 first set victory. Despite the first set loss, the Skyhawks outkilled the Panthers 13-11, though Adelphi made five blocks in the set.

    Stonehill bounced back in the second set with a 25-20 win. The two teams fought back-and forth until the Skyhawks put together a late 3-0 run to build a 17-14 cushion. A Burgess kill and combined block, alongside senior Clare Feeman made it a 17-14 game. Another three-point swing thanks to a couple of unforced errors from Adelphi and a Remick kill helped the Skyhawks to a 20-15 lead en route to the set victory
  • Stonehill took a 2-1 lead after a dominant 25-13 set three victory. Stonehill put together tiny runs throughout the entirety of the set, including a 3-0 push to end the set, capped by a trio of kills from sophomore Jentry Allen, senior Carly Russell and Burgess, who slammed down the game-winner. Stonehill finished with 14 kills to Adelphi's six in the set, also adding three blocks and taking advantage of nine Panther attack errors. 
  • Adelphi evened the score in set four edging out the Skyhawks for a 25-21 set victory. Adelphi erased an early 12-9 deficit to take an 18-15 lead on their way to the win which was solidified by a Samantha Meehan slam. 
  • The fifth set took extra points to decide the winner, before Stonehill was able to claim it and the victory, 18-16. The two teams were unrelenting going point-for-point until the Skyhawks were able to manage a two-point advantage 10-8 thanks to a Feeman service ace and a Burgess kill. Stonehill was able to hold on to that advantage until Adelphi used a 3-0 run to take a 14-13 lead, looking for the victory. Following a timeout, Stonehill evened the score at 14-all and ultimately was able to use a 2-0 run to fend off two Adelphi match points and earn the victory behind a pair of kills from Burgess and Feeman.

Stonehill (18-6, 8-1 NE10) looks to keep the ball rolling on Wednesday night, when it plays host to Assumption University for an NE10 match at 7 p.m. Adelphi University (15-9, 4-5 NE10) will return to the court next Friday at Franklin Pierce University at 6 p.m.
