Women’s Track & Field Competes at URI Coaches’ Tribute Invitational

Lastra finishes first in 3000-meter run ahead of Division I competition


Howard saw her first individual title in the Purple & White, taking home first place in the mile

KINGSTON, Rhode Island (February 8, 2019) – The Stonehill College women's track & field team competed at the URI Coaches' Tribute Invitational on Saturday at the Mackal Fieldhouse.

With one week until the Northeast-10 Conference Championships, the Stonehill women's track & field team saw two first-place finishes and nine career best performances.

Junior Anna Lastra finished first in the 3000-meter run with a time of 10:22.75 out of 12 competitors. Her time places her second on the NE10 performance list, as she beat out Division I competitors. Also in the 3000-meter run was freshman Siobhan O'Keefe, who placed sixth overall with her time of 10:42.52.

Sophomore Jillian Howard also crossed the finish line with first place clocking in a time of 5:15.87 in the mile run. Howard's name sits fifth on the NE10 performance list. Behind Howard, was sophomore Sophia Anderle, as she clocked in a time of 5:16.87 out of 24 competitors. Jordan Callahan was next for the Skyhawks with her time of 5:23.73 in the mile, placing sixth overall.

In the long jump, Olivia Dexter took home the runner-up mark with her distance of 18 feet, 0.5 inches out of 31 competitors. This measurement puts her fourth on the NE10 performance list. Jessydoris Iwuala finished 11th in the long jump with her career-best mark of 16 feet, 3.25 inches.

Iwuala also competed in the high jump, taking home fourth out of 26 with a career best clearance of 5 feet, 3.75 inches. Madison Ward finished right ahead of her for third place with a height of 5 feet, 5.25 inches. Kathleen Giusti also saw a career best mark with her height of 5 feet, 3.75 inches, taking home sixth place overall.


Dexter finished second in the long jump with a mark of 18 feet, 0.5 inches

Shayla Lyons took the top mark for the Skyhawks in both the shot put and the weight throw finishing sixth and 12th, respectively. Lyons threw the shot put 41 feet, 8 inches out of 25 competitors, while she threw the weight throw a mark of 44 feet, 9.75 inches out of 26 competitors.

Zoe Smith ran a career-best time in the 60-meter dash finishing in 8.16-seconds out of 39 competitors and was second in her hit. Sinead O'Brien clocked in a time of 8.20-seconds in the same event, placing 14th overall. O'Brien later ran in the 200-meter run finishing in seventh with a time of 26.39-seconds, a career best.

Smith also ran the 60-meter hurdles, finishing fifth in the preliminary round with a time of 9.17-seconds, and then taking seventh in finals with a time of 9.25-seconds.

Freshman Deirdre Boyer led the way for the Purple & White with a time of 1:03.60 in the 400-meter run, as she finished fourth in her heat. Classmate Caroline Murphy and sophomore Fiona Jordan also finished in the top 10 taking home eighth and ninth, respectively. Murphy finished the race in 1:04.13, while Jordan clocked in at 1:04.37.

Kelly Higgins competed in the 800-meter run clocking in a time of 2:23.86, good for fifth place. Claire Mason so a career best time of 2:26.41 in the 800-meter run, finishing 10th out of 20 competitors.

Stonehill returns to action next weekend, when it competes at the Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by American International College, at Smith College's indoor facility in Northampton, Massachusetts, Saturday and Sunday, February 16-17.
