Northeast-10 Conference Announces All-Conference Awards

EASTON, Mass. (March 22, 2019) – The Stonehill College cross country and track & field head coach Karen Boen has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year, as announce by the league on Friday.

Boen, who is in her 22nd season in charge of the Skyhawks, has totaled 62 Coach of the Year awards, five of them being women's indoor track and field Conference Coach of the Year. She led the women's team to their sixth-straight NE10 indoor title this past February and 17 All-Conference nods in the two-day meet. The Skyhawks combined for 166 points, while Assumption College wasn't far behind with 120 points taking home second place, and Southern Connecticut totaled 68 points for third place.

With the women's sixth-straight NE10 Indoor Championship under their belt, the Skyhawks have won 11-straight Championships including cross country, indoor, and outdoor track & field. Over the past 17 NE10 Championships, Stonehill women have won 16.

Most recently, Boen earned her fifth-straight U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) East Region Indoor Track & Field Coach of the Year in early March.

"It is always an honor to be recognized by your peers," states Coach Boen. "This year is no different. What I hope never gets lost is the fact that it takes more than a Head Coach to win a championship. Track & Field requires expertise in many events and I feel that my staff is equally responsible for the winning the championship. We scored points across all events which is a tribute to the coaches' expertise and the great athletes that excelled under their guidance. I drive the bus but a team can't win with one person alone.  Everyone deserves this recognition."

During the indoor championship, the women saw two individual event titles including senior Krista Fernandes who won the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.84-seconds, for her first individual NE10 Championship title. Fernandes, along with senior Jillian Caiazzi and juniors Alyssa Freeman and Anna Lastra, was also part of the 4000-meter distance medley relay team that earned first place on day one of the championship with a time of 12:03.51.

During cross country season, Boen was tabbed USTFCCCA Men's and Women's Cross Country East Region Coach of the Year and NE10 Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. She led the men to their fifth NCAA Division II East Region title and the women to their 17th NE10 title and 10th-straight crown this fall, including the program's fourth-straight individual title with Lastra. This was the third time in Conference history that a program saw four-straight individual titles, with Springfield College leading the way with six-straight from 1987-92.

In 2017, Boen saw the fifth year that she tallied both the men's and women's NE10 Coach of the Year Award in cross country, the other years include: 2013, 2012, 2011, and 2004. Boen's success extends beyond the conference level, however, she has also collected East Region Coach of the Year Honors for all six teams. Overall, her resume includes 62 NE10 and East Region Coach of the Year Awards, 36 NE10 Championships, and 18 East Region Championships across the six teams she is in charge of. Boen, who was inducted into the Stonehill Hall of Fame in 2014, has overseen the development of 72 All-Americans and four fellow Hall of Fame inductees. Stonehill will open the 2019 outdoor track & field schedule on Saturday, March 30 with the UMass Lowell Invitational, hosted by the University of Massachusetts Lowell at Cushing Field Complex in Lowell, Massachusetts.
