Women’s Track & Field Opens Season at Howlin’ Husky Invitational

Dexter opens her senior season with a provisional qualifying mark in the 60-meter dash


Fernandes was one of the Skyhawks that earned a top-10 finish with her fifth-place mark in the 500-meter run

BOSTON, Massachusetts (December 8, 2018) – The Stonehill College women's track & field team opened the indoor season with the Howlin' Husky Invitational at the Reggie Lewis Track & Field Center on Saturday afternoon, hosted by Northeastern University.

Olivia Dexter led the Skyhawks with a provisional qualifying mark and career best time in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.66. The senior took home first in her heat with a time of 7.70, qualifying her for the finals where she took the individual title in the event. Junior Sinead O'Brien also competed in the 60-meter sprint, finishing the race in a career best time of 8.21 for 12th overall.

O'Brien later competed in the 200-meter run, as she finished first in her heat and ninth overall to lead the Skyhawks with her time of 26.61 as the second Division II competitor across the finish line. Sophomore Casey Gannon was the second Skyhawk across the finish line overall as she took home 12th with a time of 26.95

Zoe Smith qualified for finals in the 60-meter hurdles, clocking in a time of 9.29. The junior placed second in her heat with a time of 9.24 and then placed sixth overall in the event, also qualifying her for New England's. Freshman Savanna Macaluso also took home a top-10 finish in her first-collegiate meet, clocking in a time of 9.36, as she finished third in her heat.

In the mile, senior Jillian Caiazzi crossed the finish line sixth with a time of 5:11.74, while Siobhan O'Keefe ran in her first-collegiate track meet clocking in a time of 5:15.89, placing seventh.

Senior Krista Fernandes led the way for the Skyhawks in the 500-meter run finishing in 1:17.81, a career best, for fifth overall out of 16, good for the first Division II competitor.


Lyons qualified for New England's in the first meet of the season with her sixth-place finish in the shot put

Sophomore Jessydoris Iwuala was the first Division II competitor and second-overall finisher in the high jump as she cleared five feet, three inches in her first attempt of her third height. Sophomore Kathleen Giusti was the next Skyhawk, as she finished fourth of 15 competitors with her height of five feet, three inches in her third attempt of her third height. Senior Ashley Daggett was close behind with her fifth-place mark and her height of five feet, one inch on her first attempt of her second height.

Out of 19 competitors, junior Shayla Lyons threw the shot put a distance of 42 feet, 3.25 inches on her fifth throw finishing sixth overall qualifying for New England's, while freshman Krista Stracqualursi tossed the shot put 35, 9.25 inches in her first-collegiate meet, taking home ninth place, on her first throw.

Freshman Claire Mason earned seventh place in the in 1000-meter run as first division II competitor crossing the finish line in 3:08.12, while senior Anna DeVitto placed ninth with a time of 3:12.33.

The Skyhawks will head to winter break before taking on the Beantown Challenge from Friday, January 11 to Saturday, January 12 at the Gordon Indoor Track, hosted by Harvard University
