Dexter Highlights Women’s Track & Field on Day 2 of 54th Colonial Relays

Stonehill brings total to nine New England qualifiers, adding five from Friday's events 


Fernandes qualifies for New England's with her time of 1:04.77 in the 400-meter hurdles

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia (April 5, 2019) – The Stonehill College women's track and field continued the outdoor season with day two of the 54th Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Virginia hosted by the College of William & Mary at the Walter J. Zable Stadium on Friday.

Five Skyhawks qualified for the New England Championships in the second meet of the season, while there were four top-10 results on day two and three career bests.

Senior Olivia Dexter brings her total of events qualified for New England Championships to three after competing in the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints. Dexter clocked in a time of 12.27-seconds in the 100-meter dash finishing as the runner up out of 66 competitors. She finished .06 seconds behind the first-place finisher from James Madison University. The senior then finished seventh out of 78 in the 200-meter dash crossing the finish line in 25.40-seconds.

Classmate Krista Fernandes qualified for her first New England event this season with her mark of 1:04.77 in the 400-meter hurdles. She finished 11th out of 58 competitors in the race.

In the 10,000-meter run, senior Makenzie Cyr and sophomore Samantha Curtin both registered a qualifying time to compete at the New England Championships. Curtin led the way for the two with a career best time of 38:32.06 finishing 25th out of 29 competitors, as Cyr clocked in a time of 39:07.04.

Junior Madison Ward and sophomore Kathleen Giusti took home the third and fourth top-10 finishes of the day for the Skyhawks. Ward, in the championship division, placed third out of 17 high jumpers clearing a height of 5 feet, 3.25 inches. Giusti earned the same result in the university division clearing a mark of 5 feet, 1.25 inches.

Five Skyhawks saw a top-20 result including junior Zoe Smith who placed 11th out of 44 competitors in the 100-meter hurdles as the first Division II competitor to clock in the fastest time with 15.06-seconds. Freshman Savanna Macaluso registered a season best time of 16.12-seconds placing 28th in the field.


Cyr was one of five qualifying times for New Englands, as she competed in the 5000-meter run

Junior Alyssa Freeman led the Skyhawks in the 800-meter run as she finished the race in 2:20.26 placing 18th out of 60 competitors. Classmate Shayla Lyons also finished in the top 20 of her event, tossing the hammer a distance of 125 feet, 6 inches finishing 16th of 32.

In a field of 91 competitors, Anna Lastra placed 19th with a time of 4:41.63 in the 1500-meter run leading four other Skyhawk runners in the event.

Along with Dexter, junior Sinead O'Brien competed in the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints. She clocked in at 13.11-seconds in the 100-meter dash taking home 42nd place, as she crossed the finish line in 27.07-seconds in the 200-meter placing 49th. Sophomore Sophia Anderle was one of four Skyhawks in the 5000-meter run as she led the way with her 34th-place finish clocking in a time of 18:12.37.

The Skyhawks will take on the final day of the 54th Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Virginia at the Walter J. Zable Stadium hosted by the College of William & Mary tomorrow, Saturday, April 6. Stonehill will host its annual Skyhawk Invitational on Saturday, April 27.
