Men's Hockey Falls to Alaska Fairbanks in Season Finale

FAIRBANKS, Alas. (March 7, 2024) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team dropped its 2023-24 season finale to Alaska Fairbanks on the road, 4-1, Thursday night. With the loss, the Skyhawks end the year 2-34 overall, while the Nanooks cap off their campaign with a 17-14-3 record.

Highlights

  • Junior Jake Cady lit the lamp on his fifth goal of the season and third over the last four games.
  • Sophomore Alexander Tertyshny dished out his fifth assist of the year on Cady's first period goal.
  • Sophomore Ryan Davies finished with a game-high four blocked shots.
  • Sophomore netminder Dylan Meilun tallied 42 saves on the night for the Skyhawks, marking his eighth game of the season with 40 or more saves.
  • Junior Harrison Israels netted his team-leading 20th goal of the season for Alaska Fairbanks.
  • Graduate student Jonny Sorenson led the Nanooks offensive output with two points off a goal and an assist.
  • Junior Anton Rubtsov and sophomore AJ Macaulay added their fifth and eighth goals of the season, respectively.
  • Senior Pierce Charleson picked up the win in net for the Nanooks after stopping 10 of his 11 shots faced inside the crease.

How it Happened

  • Despite being outshot 8-2 over the first 10 minutes, Stonehill scored on its second shot on goal of the contest.
  • Cady skated through the neutral zone and deked past Nanook defenders before scoring his fifth goal of the season on a backhanded shot through the five-hole. 
  • Meilun and the Skyhawks defense would stand tall throughout the opening frame, stopping 13 shots on goal to keep Alaska Fairbanks off the board after the first 20 minutes of action. 
  • Coming out of the break, the Nanooks nearly tied the game just three minutes into the second period after junior Brady Risk glanced a shot off the crossbar behind Meilun. 
  • Israels knotted the game at one aside at the 13:39 mark of the second after scoring his 20th goal of the season, shorthanded on a breakaway.
  • After being outshot 20-4 in the middle frame, the Skyhawks would head into the second intermission tied with Alaska Fairbanks, 1-1.
  • The Nanooks gained their first lead of the game less than two minutes into the third period when Macaulay lit the lamp for his fifth of the season on the power play. 
  • Rubtsov extended the Alaska Fairbanks lead to 3-1 at the 10:05 mark of the period before Sorenson capped off the scoring with just over three minutes left in regulation to seal the 4-1 victory over Stonehill.
