Men's Hockey Comes Up Short, 4-2, Against LIU

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (October 30, 2023) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team came up short, 4-2, against Long Island University (LIU) at the Bridgewater Ice Arena Monday night. The Skyhawks fall to 0-7-0 on the season, while the Sharks improve to 3-5-0 on the year.

Highlights

  • Senior captain Max Pineo scored his first goal of the season, while freshman defender Charles Banquier netted the first of his young career.
  • Junior Kyle Heath dished out his team-leading third assist on the young campaign, while sophomore Frank Ireland distributed his first of the season for the Skyhawks.
  • Sophomore netminder Dylan Meilun tallied 34 saves in goal for Stonehill, marking his fifth game of the season with 30 or more saves.
  • Graduate student Remy Parker, sophomore Josh Zary, and sophomore Isaiah Fox recorded multi-point games for LIU.
  • Parker lit the lamp twice on the night, while Zary scored a goal and dished out an assist along with Fox who distributed two assists for the Sharks.
  • Junior goalkeeper Rico DiMatteo earned his second win in net for LIU after stopping eight of his 10 shots faced in goal.

How it Happened

  • After opening the game even on both sides of the ice, LIU would open the scoring at the 8:25 mark of the first period, where Parker scored his sixth goal of the season.
  • Trailing 1-0 coming out of the first intermission, Stonehill would respond with a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes of the middle frame.
  • Pineo scored less than three minutes into the period on an unassisted power-play goal, while Banquier netted his first career goal shorthanded off assists from Heath and Ireland.
  • However, less than two minutes after the Skyhawks took the lead, the Sharks would tie the game up at two with a power play goal off the stick of Parker, marking his second goal of the night. 
  • LIU would regain its lead at the 17:32 mark of the middle frame as Zary scored his fourth goal on the year.
  • The Sharks would cap off the games scoring halfway through the third, when senior defender Aaron Grounds scored his first career goal for LIU to seal the victory over Stonehill.
