Men's Hockey Falls to Alaska-Fairbanks, 3-1, at Home

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. (November 10, 2023) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision at the Bridgewater Ice Arena to Alaska-Fairbanks on Friday. With the loss the Skyhawks fall to 0-10 on the season, while the Nanooks improve to 5-3-1 on the year.

Highlights

  • Sophomore Frank Ireland scored his team-leading fourth goal of the season off sophomore Dean Schwenninger's first assist on the young campaign.
  • Sophomore goaltender Dylan Meilun made his seventh-straight start in net for the Skyhawks and stopped 40 of his 43 shots faced. It marked Meilun's fifth game of the season with 40 or more saves.
  • Freshman Caleb MacDonald scored his first collegiate goal, while junior Anton Rubtsov and graduate student Jonny Sorenson recorded their third goals of the season for the Nanooks.
  • Senior netminder Pierce Charleson got the start in between the pipes for Alaska-Fairbanks and earned his fifth win of the season after posting 14 saves on the night.

How it Happened

  • After a scoreless opening 20 minutes of action, Alaska-Fairbanks would open the scoring just over five minutes into the second period as MacDonald scored his first career goal off assists from graduate student T.J. Lloyd and redshirt-junior Chase Dubois.
  • Meilun would keep the game within striking distance throughout the remainder of the middle frame, stopping seven shots over the next 15 minutes of action to keep the game at 1-0 heading into the third period.
  • Stonehill would tie the game up at one apiece after Schwenninger directed a pass out front from behind the crease to Ireland who found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
  • However, less than 90 seconds after Ireland's equalizer, the Nanooks would regain their slight one goal advantage after Rubtsov netted his third goal of the season.
  • Sorenson would cap off the Alaska-Fairbanks scoring at the 14:48 mark of the third period to seal the 3-1 victory over the Skyhawks.
