Men's Hockey Drops Series Opener at Lindenwood, 7-1

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, Mo. (January 26, 2024) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team dropped its series opener to Lindenwood University, 7-1, Friday night at the Centene Community Ice Center in Maryland Heights, Missouri.

Highlights

  • Sophomore Frank Ireland scored the lone goal for the Skyhawks. Ireland is now tied for the team-lead with seven goals on the season.
  • Sophomore defenders Alexander Tertyshny and William Tripp dished out their second and fifth assists of the season, respectively.
  • Junior goaltender Gavin FitzPatrick made his eighth consecutive start in net for the Skyhawks where he tallied 33 saves on the night.
  • Junior Aiden Yakimchuk led the Lions offense with five points on the night off three goals and two assists.
  • Junior Kyle Jeffers added three points of his own for Lindenwood off a pair of lamp lighters and an assist.
  • Junior netminder Trent Burnham picked up his fourth win of the season in between the pipes after stopping 21 of his 22 shots faced.

How it Happened

  • Lindenwood started the scoring right away as the Lions netted three goals in the opening frame off the sticks of Jeffers and Yakimchuk. 
  • Jeffers scored his first of the period at the 3:00 mark of the first before Yakimchuk netted his first of the game at the 11:00 mark. Jeffers capped off his scoring with just under five minutes left in the first to give Lindenwood a commanding three-goal lead heading into the break.
  • Ireland brought the game to within two goals for the Skyhawks after redirecting a shot off the blue line from Tripp past Burnham in net to get Stonehill on the board early in the second.
  • However, Lindenwood would respond at the 16:11 mark of the middle frame to regain their three-goal lead at 4-1 after freshman Ethan Zielke lit the lamp on his second goal of the season.
  • In the final frame, Lindenwood continued to apply the offensive pressure, tacking three more goals on the board off the sticks of Yakimchuk and junior David Gagnon to seal the 7-1 victory over the Skyhawks.
