Men's Hockey Downed at Clarkson, 5-1

POTSDAM, N.Y. (December 8, 2023) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team fell on the road at Clarkson University, 5-1, on Friday night. With the loss, the Skyhawks fall to 0-17 on the season, while the Golden Knights improve to 8-5-1 on the year.

Highlights

  • Sophomore defender Greg Japchen netted his second goal of the season for the Skyhawks lone goal against Clarkson.
  • Freshman classmates Charles Banquier and Conor Ronayne dished out their second and fourth assists of the season, respectively.
  • Sophomore netminder Dylan Meilun tallied 31 saves in between the pipes for Stonehill.
  • Three Golden Knights posted multi-point games including graduate students Jack Judson and Eric Ciccolini as well as junior Ayrton Martino.
  • Postgrad goaltender Austin Roden picked up his seventh win of the season in net for Clarkson after stopping 17 of his 18 shots faced on the night.

How it Happened

  • Clarkson would open the scoring at the 11:04 mark of the opening frame after Martino lit the lamp with a one-timer on the power play, giving the Golden Knights an early 1-0 advantage.
  • The Golden Knights would double their lead after scoring their second power-play goal of the contest with just under two minutes left in the first period as sophomore Ryan Taylor netted his team-leading sixth goal. 
  • Clarkson would enter the first intermission with a commanding three-goal lead after sophomore Tristan Sarsland beat the buzzer and scored his second goal in the final second of the opening frame. 
  • After a back-and-forth opening 15 minutes of the second period, the Golden Knights would extend their lead to 4-0 after graduate student Dustyn McFaul sent a shot over the shoulder of Meilun and into the back of the cage for his second goal of the season. 
  • Stonehill would get on the board after a drop pass from Banquier found the stick of Japchen, who scored his second goal of the season on the power play.
  • However, just 19 seconds later, Clarkson would cap off the scoring after Ciccolini scored on a rebound in front of the Skyhawks net to the 5-1 victory for the Golden Knights.

Stonehill (0-17-0) will go on a three-week hiatus before returning to action on New Years Eve, December 31, against Merrimack College. Puck drop from North Andover, Mass., between the Skyhawks and Warriors is set for 2 p.m.
