Men's Hockey Falls to Robert Morris in Series Finale

MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (January 6, 2024) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team fell to Robert Morris University, 7-3, in their series finale Saturday night. With the loss, the Skyhawks dropped to 0-20 overall, while the Colonials improved to 6-13-3 on the year.

Highlights

  • Freshman Anthony Galante scored his first two career goals, while sophomore defender Greg Japchen netted his third of the season.
  • Galante's two-goal outing marks just the second this season for the Skyhawks, dating back to freshman classmate Conor Ronayne's two-goal game against Anna Maria College on November 18th.
  • Junior Henri Schreifels registered his first career two-assist game, while sophomore William Tripp dished out his second on the campaign.
  • Junior goaltender Gavin FitzPatrick made his third start of the season in net, where he tallied 33 saves on the night for the Skyhawks.
  • Graduate student Dallas Tulik, senior Cameron Hebert, freshman Jackson Reineke, freshman McKay Hayes, and postgrad Rylee St. Onge each registered two points on the night.
  • Graduate student Paul Maust and freshman Walter Zacher added goals of their own for the Colonials.
  • Postgrad netminder Chad Veltri picked up his sixth win in goal for RMU after stopping 28 of his 31 shots between the pipes.

How it Happened

  • Stonehill started the game out strong, registering five shot attempts over the first minutes of the contest.
  • Freshman Jake LaRusso nearly got the scoring started at the 4:21 mark of the contest, raising a backhanded shot from the slot just wide of the RMU net.
  • Less than two minutes after the Skyhawks scoring chance, the Colonials would light the lamp for the game-opening goal off the stick of Hayes.
  • The Skyhawks would respond with a goal of their own at the 14:30 mark of the first as Galante would push his way through the RMU defense and score his first career goal shorthanded, tying the game up at one apiece heading into the first intermission.
  • Both sides would trade goals coming out of the break as St. Onge scored at 8:58 into the second before Japchen would respond with a one-time slapshot into the back of the cage less than three minutes later to tie the game back up at 2-2.
  • However, the Colonials would regain their offensive momentum from Friday night, tacking three goals on the board over a two-minute span to take a commanding 5-2 lead into the third period.
  • Despite trading goals in the third period, the RMU lead grew too much for the Skyhawks to overcome, eventually falling by a final score of 7-3.
