Meilun posts 36 saves in Skyhawks goal, but third period power play goal lifts Falcons to win

WALTHAM, Mass. (October 20, 2022) – Bentley University used a third period power play goal to break a scoreless deadlock and went on to secure a 2-0 victory over Stonehill College in a non-conference ice hockey matchup at Bentley Arena tonight.

Highlights

  • Sophomore goaltender Dylan Meilun stopped 36 of the 37 shots on goal he faced, including a second period penalty shot, for Stonehill.
  • Sophomore Connor Hasley completed the shutout in goal for Bentley with 18 saves.
  • Sophomore Stephen Castagna had a hand in both Bentley goals with a goal and assist.
  • Junior Sam Duerr pushed the Falcons in front with a power play goal.

How it Happened 

  • Meilun shined in a scoreless opening period, posting 20 of his 36 saves in the first 20 minutes of the contest.
  • Bentley was awarded a penalty shot 16:18 into the second period, but Meilun was again up to the task, forcing freshman Colby Amici wide and made the stop to keep the game scoreless heading to the final period.
  • Bentley was able to break through 6:58 into the third period as Duerr delivered a power play goal, assisted by Castagna and senior Nick Bochen.
  • Castagna sealed the win with an empty net goal with 19-seconds remaining.

Noteworthy

  • Tonight marked the first meeting between these two rival institutions since the 1997-98 season, the year prior to Bentley elevating its ice hockey program to the NCAA Division I level. The Falcons took the 37th meeting all-time in a series that dates to the late 1970s and now hold a 29-8 advantage in the series.
  • Stonehill had its chances on the power play but was unable to find the back of the next on six chances. The Falcons finished one-of-five on the power play.
  • Meilun has 30-plus saves in all three Stonehill games this season, while tonight's total is his lowest of the season.
  • Stonehill posted an 8-7 edge in shots in the third period.
