Men’s Ice Hockey Skates to 5-2 Loss at Union

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (November 24, 2023) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team fell 5-2 at Union College Friday night as the Skyhawks dropped to 0-13-0 on the year in the first of a two-game series from Messa Rink at the Achilles Center this weekend.

Highlights 

  • Sophomore Frank Ireland netted his team-leading fifth goal of the season for Stonehill and tallied his third assist on the year, tied for the second most on the team.
  • Junior Henri Schreifels also had a goal and an assist for the Skyhawks, scoring his fourth of the season, second-most on the Skyhawks while recording his second assist.
  • Freshman Dominick Campione assisted on his third goal of the season.
  • Freshman Charles Banquier notched his first career assist.
  • Five different Chargers scored for Union in the win as four skaters recorded two points in the winning effort.
  • Netminder Kyle Chauvette improved to 5-4-0 on the year with his 10-save performance for the Chargers while sophomore Dylan Meilun stopped 26 shots and is now 0-11-0 on the season.

How it Happened

  • The first period saw both teams go scoreless for the first 20 minutes of the game as Union put nine shots on net while Stonehill didn't find a scoring opportunity. The Skyhawks and Chargers both went 0-1 on the power play in the first period.
  • At the 2:03 mark early in the second period, Union netted the first goal of the game as John Prokop sent a centering pass toward the middle of the slot, finding the stick of Josh Nixon who redirected it to the bottom right corner of the net for the first score of the game.
  • The Chargers doubled their lead 33 seconds later when Tyler Watkins gathered the loose puck off the boards in the offensive end and skated it towards the net, flicking a wrist shot from between the face-off circles and past the stick of Meilun on the left side.
  • The second period would end with the Chargers leading 2-0 as Union put 13 shots on goal compared to the four the Skyhawks were able to put on net in the second period. Stonehill's penalty kill held strong in the second as Union went 0-2.
  • The Chargers scored their third goal of the game just 1:21 into the third period as Cullen Ferguson wristed a shot towards the net from the left face-off circle that Ben Tupker deflected from just in front of the crease to the top right corner of the goal.
  • Stonehill got on the board at the 3:44 mark of the third period when Campione skated the puck deep into the offensive zone, sending a back-handed pass from the left face-off circle in the direction of a streaking Ireland who tipped it past the goalie from right in front of the net to make the score 3-1.
  • Carter Korpi answered for Union at 13:10 in the third with a right-handed wrist shot from the dot of the left face-off circle that went top-shelf past Meilun as the Chargers led 4-1.
  • Union scored its fifth and final goal at 15:08 in the third as Cole Kodsi blasted a one-timer from the right side of the goal, sending the puck to the top right corner for the score.
  • Just 20 seconds into a power play chance, the Skyhawks tallied their second goal of the period as Schreifels skated the puck from just in front of the blue line to the right face-off dot where he rocketed a wrist-shot past the outstretched glove of the Charger goalie to make the score 5-2 at the 16:15 mark of the third.
  • Union outshot Stonehill 9-8 in the third and would go on to win the first of two games at Messa Rink, 5-2.
