Stonehill Posts Key Win Over Saint Michael’s, 7-2


Senior Amy Toegemann led the double-winners for Stonehill with victories at No. 1 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Toegemann, Frost and Hickey lead Skyhawks to seventh-straight win

EASTON, Mass. (April 1, 2012) – Stonehill College, ranked seventh in the first NCAA Division II East Regional rankings released today, picked up a key 7-2 victory over ninth-ranked Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action at Sally Blair Ames Sports Complex today.

Seniors Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) and Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee), junior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) and freshman Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) were all double-winners to lead Stonehill to its seventh-straight win. Toegemann and Lawrence teamed up for a dominant 8-0 sweep at No. 3 doubles as the Skyhawks took two of three doubles matches on the day. Toegemann then posted a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Saint Michael's junior Emily Magee (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) at No. 1 singles. Lawrence topped senior Emily Ogilvy (Bedford, N.H./Trinity) at No. 6 singles, 6-1, 6-3.

Frost and Hickey combined for an 8-2 triumph at No. 1 doubles for Stonehill. Frost then cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Saint Michael's junior Jean-Marie McGrath (Niwot, Colo./Alexander Dawson School) at No. 4 singles, while Hickey posted a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over freshman Hannah Benoit (Mystic, Conn./Saint Bernard School) at No. 5. Freshman Katie Gilligan (Wakefield, R.I./The Prout School) also picked up a point for the Skyhawks with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over freshman Caroline Martin (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) at No. 3 singles.

Martin and McGrath combined to win a point for Saint Michael's with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles. Junior Alex Dalton (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) also won a point with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles against Stonehill junior Jennifer Denyes (Bradenton, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal).

Stonehill (11-3, 9-0 NE-10) returns to action on Wednesday when it visits Southern New Hampshire University, ranked fourth in the East Region, for a huge NE-10 clash at 3 p.m. The Skyhawks return home on Tuesday, April 10, to host Saint Anselm College at 3 p.m. Saint Michael's (9-6, 8-2 NE-10) hosts Saint Anselm Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
