Skyhawks cruise to third-straight shutout win

BRIARCLIFF, N.Y. (October 2, 2011) – Stonehill College, ranked fourth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, picked up its second 9-0 decision of the weekend with its victory at Pace University  in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action today.

Senior Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) continues to cruise for Stonehill as she led the double-winners again today by posting her third-straight 6-0, 6-0 victory to start the Skyhawks dual match schedule as she defeated Pace sophomore Liz Plakhotnaya (Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) at No. 2 singles after combining with classmate Bacall Brooks (York, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas) for an 8-1 triumph at No. 2 doubles. Toegemann has now won 36-straight games in singles play dating back to the Wilson/ITA East Regional last month.

Senior Leah White (Walpole, Mass./Bishop Feehan), junior Jennifer Denyes (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephens Episcopal) and freshmen Katie Gilligan (Wakefield, R.I./The Prout School) and Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, Mass./Mount Saint Charles Academy) were all double winners as well for Stonehill.

White and Denyes teamed up for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, before White added a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Pace junior Simona Mrazova (Bratislava, Serbia) at No. 1 singles. Denyes also topped Pace sophomore Gina Pittore (Valley Cottage, N.Y./Nyack), 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Gilligan and Lawrence rolled to an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles and then Gilligan followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles while Lawrence won at No. 6 after junior Ashley Wnuk (Westerly, R.I./The Prout School) retired. Sophomore Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) picked up a 6-1, 6-1 decision for Stonehill at No. 5 singles.

Stonehill (3-0, 3-0 NE-10) is right back in action on Thursday when it visits Providence College for a non-conference matchup at 3:30 p.m. The Skyhawks return home to round out the fall season against Le Moyne College on Sunday, October 16, at 10 a.m. Pace (0-2, 0-2 NE-10) hosts Le Moyne College next Saturday at 11 a.m.
