EASTON, Mass. (April 28, 2012) – Fifth-seeded Stonehill College starts its quest for a second NCAA Championships berth when it hosts fourth-seeded Concordia (N.Y.) College in first round action of the 2012 NCAA Division II Tournament East Regional on Monday at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 11 a.m.
Stonehill (15-5, 12-1 NE-10), who have earned a share of a sixth Northeast-10 Conference regular season championship, is making its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and seventh overall in program history. The Skyhawks are serving as host of the three team sub-regional, while second-seeded and 45th-ranked Southern New Hampshire University, who shared the NE-10 regular season crown, along with Adelphi University, with Stonehill and captured the NE-10 tournament title, is hosting the other four team sub-regional in Manchester, N.H. Admission to the sub-regional at Stonehill is free of charge.
Stonehill will open the tournament against fourth-seeded Concordia (10-1, 8-0 CACC), ranked 35th in the most recent ITA Division II national rankings, in an opening round matchup on Monday at 11 a.m. The Clippers, regular season and tournament champions from the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, returns to the NCAA Tournament after reaching the national quarterfinals last spring where they were defeated by eventual national champions Barry University. The winner of Monday's first round match will face top-seeded and 28th-ranked Queens (N.Y.) College (17-1, 6-0 ECC), who earned a first round bye, in Tuesday's second round at Watt Courts at 11 a.m.

Stonehill, under the direction of head coach Pam Arpe in her eighth season (131-36/.784), is led by seniors Bacall Brooks (York, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas), Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) and Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School), who have been part of four-straight NCAA Tournament bids, four-straight NE-10 tournament championship appearances and were freshmen on the 2009 squad that won the NE-10 regular season and tournament crowns before reaching the NCAA Division II Tournament's "Sweet 16." The Skyhawks have gone a combined 74-17 (.813), including a 48-3 (.941) mark in NE-10 regular season matches, over their career.
Hickey, a four-time All-Northeast-10 singles and two-time All-NE-10 doubles player after earning honors at both this season, finished with a perfect 35-0 record over her career in NE-10 singles matches, entering Monday's match a 58-2 career singles mark after winning the first 48 singles matches of her career. She is a combined 21-6 in singles and doubles play this season, posting a 10-2 singles mark. She and junior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) have posted an 11-4 record at No. 1 doubles.
Frost also earned second team All-NE-10 performer at No. 3 singles for Stonehill, to go with third team doubles honors with Hickey, is 9-4 in singles play this season, including a 7-2 NE-10 clip. She is 5-3 at No. 3 and 4-1 at No. 4.
Toegemann is 43-31 all-time in singles matches over her career, including a 31-13 NE-10 mark, to go with a 69-11 career doubles clip. Brooks is 28-10 in doubles play over her career, including a 19-2 mark in NE-10 matches, and earned All-NE-10 honors along with doubles partner, junior Jacquelyn Harrow (North Reading, Mass./North Reading). The duo have posted an 11-4 record this season.

Freshman Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy), a first team All-Conference performer for singles and NE-10 All-Rookie team selection, is a combined 35-5 in singles and doubles play in her first collegiate season. She is 20-2 in singles matches, including a 13-0 NE-10 mark, posting a 10-1 clip at No. 6 and going 6-0 at No. 5. She has posted a 15-3 overall doubles record, teaming up with Toegemann for a 6-1 mark of late at No. 3.
Concordia, who hasn't played a match since dropping a 6-3 decision to 41st-ranked Indiana (Pa.) University back on March 25, is led by junior Yuliya Plevako (Astana, Kazakhstan) who is regionally ranked by the ITA for both singles and doubles. The East Region's third-ranked singles player is 9-2 this season, going 7-1 in Conference play, while competing at the No. 1 slot for the Clippers. She and senior Clara Catanzano (Sete, France) are the No. 3-ranked doubles team in the East Region and have posted a 10-1 mark at No. 1 doubles, including a 7-1 clip in CACC play, winning their last ten matches.
Senior Juliana Frey (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) has yet to lose a singles match for Concordia, going 8-0 in CACC matches and posting an 8-0 clip at No. 4. Castanzano is 8-3 overall, including a 7-1 CACC mark, posting a 7-3 record at No. 3. Senior Maria Ortiz (Bogota, Columbia) is 7-1 this season, including a 6-0 CACC record, competing at No. 5 singles.
Concordia has dropped just three doubles matches this season, going 30-3. The Clippers remaining pairings are Frey and Ana S.O. Mendes (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) going 10-1 at No. 2 and Ortiz and junior Camilla Xavier (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) posting a 10-1 ledger at No. 3.
These two teams met in the NCAA Tournament two years ago as Concordia posted a 5-1 second round win at Watt Courts to advance to the Round of 16. Plevako was a double-winner for the Clippers, teaming up with Ortiz as the Clippers won two of three doubles matches with an 8-3 decision at No. 2. She also posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles. Hickey and former teammate Chelsea Haedrich combined for the lone Stonehill point with an 8-3 victory at No. 3.
Frey and Mendes clashed with Stonehill sophomore Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) and freshman Katie Gilligan (Wakefield, R.I./The Prout School) in the round of 16 for the B-doubles bracket at the ITA East Regional in September and posted an 8-1 win.
The second East Regional bracket, hosted at second-seeded Southern New Hampshire (18-5, 12-1 NE-10), and also includes third-seeded University of District of Columbia (15-3, 5-1 ECC), sixth-seeded Adelphi University (16-4, 12-1 NE-10) and seventh-seeded Chestnut Hill College (19-6, 7-1 CACC) April 28 and 29. The two East Regional winners will advance to the NCAA Championships being held in conjunction with the NCAA Spring Championships Festival in Louisville, Ky., from May 16-19.
