Freshmen play role in both Skyhawk victories against nationally-ranked opponent

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 13, 2012) – Wayne State (Mich.) University, ranked 30th in the ITA Division II national rankings, posted a 7-2 victory over Stonehill College, ranked seventh in the ITA East Regional rankings, in non-conference women's tennis action at Lake Cane Tennis Center today.

Senior Kristina Goranaskaya (Thornhill, Ontario/Northview Heights Secondary School) and Daniela Garcia-Cruz (Cali, Columbia), two regionally-ranked singles players in the ITA Midwest Region, led the double-winners for Wayne State. The fourth-ranked doubles tandem in the region opened with an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles over Stonehill junior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) and senior Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee). Goranskaya, ranked fourth in the Midwest region cruised past Stonehill senior Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, while Garcia-Diaz, ranked 17th in the region, topped Skyhawks junior Jennifer Denyes (Bradenton, Fla./St. Stephens Episcopal) at No. 2, 6-2, 6-1.

Freshman Yahsha Moore (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) and freshman Anne Li Briand (Repentigny, Quebec/École Secondaire Félix-Leclerc) , the No. 6-ranked doubles team in the Midwest region, combined for an 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Moore, ranked 20th in the Midwest, later defeated Frost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles, while Li Briand topped Hickey, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4 singles. The loss marked Hickey's first singles loss of her career, snapping a streak of 48-straight victories over her first three seasons.

Freshman Katie Gilligan (Wakefield, R.I./The Prout School) picked up one of Stonehill's points with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Wayne State sophomore Tanya Joseph (Northville, Mich./Northville) at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) and freshman Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) combined for an 8-6 triumph at No. 3 doubles for the Skyhawks as well.

Stonehill (4-2, 4-0 NE-10) is back in action tomorrow when it faces University of Indianapolis at Oak Street Park in Kissimmee, Fla., at 11:30 a.m. Wayne State (19-2, 10-1 GLIAC) hosts the University of Detroit-Mercy on Wednesday, March 21, at noon.
