Clippers answer Skyhawks singles comeback with wins at top three flights
Concordia (11-1, 8-0 CACC) advances to tomorrow's second round where it will face top-seeded and 28th-ranked Queens (N.Y.) College (17-1, 6-0 ECC) here at Stonehill at 11 a.m. Stonehill wraps up its season with a 15-6 record overall, including a 12-1 mark in the Northeast-10 to claim a share of a sixth regular season title, making its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament appearance and seventh overall.
Junior Ana S.O. Mendes (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) led Concordia to victory as a double-winner. She teamed up with senior Juliana Frey (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) for an 8-4 victory to help the Clippers to a 2-1 advantage following doubles play at No. 2. Mendes then brought Concordia within a point of victory with her 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Stonehill freshman Katie Gilligan (Wakefield, R.I./The Prout School) at No. 2 singles.
Senior Clara Catanzano (Sete, France) clinched the win as she fended off Stonehill junior Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 by winning the final four games of the third set at No. 3 singles. Junior Yuliya Plevako (Astana, Kazakhstan), the third ranked singles player in the East Region, cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 as the Clippers held off the Skyhawks rally with wins at the top three singles positions.
Frost and senior Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) gave Stonehill a huge point in doubles with their 8-5 victory over Plevako and Catanzano, the third-ranked doubles team in the region, at No. 1. Hickey was even at 2-2 in the third set of her match at No. 4 singles with Frey after they split the first two sets, 6-1, 4-6. Hickey concludes her collegiate career with a remarkable 58-2 singles record and a 94-11 combined mark in singles and doubles play.
Freshman Meryl Lawrence (North Scituate, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) and junior Jacquelyn Harrow (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) brought Stonehill back even at 3-3 with their back-to-back wins at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively. Harrow topped junior Camilla Xavier (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6, while Lawrence concluded her rookie season with a 21-2 overall record with her 15th-straight singles win, a 6-2, 6-2 victory over senior Maria Ortiz (Bogota, Columbia) at No. 5.
