#4 Stonehill Falls to #1 Queens, 5-1

Toegemann and Haedrich stage comeback at third doubles to highlight day as Skyhawks conclude sixth NCAA tournament appearance

EASTON, Mass. (May 2, 2011) – Top-seeded Queens College defeated fourth-seeded Stonehill College 5-1 in the final of the NCAA Division II Women’s Tennis East Regional #1 bracket at the Charles Watt Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Stonehill concludes the season at 19-4 overall, 12-1 in Northeast-10 Conference competition. Queens (19-1, 6-0 ECC) will advance to the NCAA Championships Round of 16 next week in Altamonte Springs, Florida, where the Knights will face the winner of the Southeast Region #2 bracket opening today at Columbus State University.

Juniors Linda Tatala-Colin (Laxou, France/Lycee Int'l Cevenol) and Andrea Salvetova (Plzen, Czech Republic/Gymnasium of Sports) led Queens with two wins apiece, pairing at No. 1 doubles to open with an 8-1 victory over senior Lindsey Herchel (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) and sophomore Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit). Each also picked up a point for the Knights in singles play as Tatala-Colin defeated junior Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 position, and Salvetova won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 over sophomore Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip).

Senior Maria Mendes (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Santo Americo) clinched the victory at No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over freshman Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway).

Toegemann and Haedrich teamed up to earn Stonehill’s point in a comeback 9-8 victory at third doubles. Trailing Mendes and junior Taylor Barber (Salt Lake City, UT/Bountiful) by a 6-3 score, Toegemann and Haedrich rallied to force a tiebreak, where the pair outlasted the Knights 9-7 to put Stonehill on the board.

Senior Laura Mocodeanu (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) and sophomore Erika Goldsmith (Edison, NJ/Edison) were also 8-3 winners for the Knights at second doubles, defeating Martin and junior Leah White (Walpole, Mass./Bishop Feehan).
