Stonehill Wins Salve Regina Grass Court Doubles Invitational

White/K. Martin and Frost/Haedrich win B and C flight titles to lead Skyhawks

NEWPORT, R.I. (September 12, 2010) – The Stonehill College women's tennis team captured the team title at the 26th annual Salve Regina Grass Court Doubles Invitational, hosted by the International Tennis Hall of Fame, on Saturday.

Stonehill placed all three of its doubles pairings in their respective flight finals and compiled 16 team points to top host Salve Regina University who finished with 12 points, while College of the Holy Cross finished third with six points.

Junior Leah White (Walpole, Mass./Bishop Feehan) and freshman Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) combined to win the B-flight doubles title, while sophomores Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) and Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) teamed up to win the C-flight title. Senior Lindsey Herchel (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) and sophomore Jacqueline Harrow (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) reached the A-flight finals before being edged by Ana Gwozdz and Erin Phillips from Salve Regina, 8-2.

White/Martin took the B-flight title with an 8-5 decision over Valerie Leso and Nichol Stevens from Salve Regina in the finals. The Stonehill pairing reached the finals by defeating Emily Marr and Emma Rudnik from Holy Cross in the quarterfinals, 8-1, before topping Emmanuel College's Megan Harrington and Jenny Konecnik in the semifinals, 8-5.

Frost/Haedrich captured the C-flight championship with an 8-2 victory over the Bridgewater State University tandem of Lauren Hopp and Jenna Williamson in the finals. The Stonehill duo topped Elise Jones and Jessica Moore from Salve Regina in the semifinals, 8-4, after defeating Curry College's Lauren Maloney and Kathleen Rush in the quarterfinals, 8-1, on their way to the finals.

Herchel/Harrow won a pair of matches on their way to a runner-up finish in the A-flight, posting an 8-1 win over Lauren Donnelly and Jessica Francis from Bridgewater State in the quarterfinals and then defeating Molly Montgomery and Maya Welch from Holy Cross in the semifinals, 8-1.

Stonehill is back in action on Friday when it visits Chestnut Hill College for its first dual match of the season at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks will then participate in the Wilson/ITA East Regional Saturday and Sunday, hosted by Chestnut Hill.
