Toegemann notches a pair of wins as the Skyhawks close out spring break competition

Amy Toegemann won both of her matches to lead the Skyhawks.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 17, 2011) – Stonehill College, currently ranked fourth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional poll, came away from a marathon five-hour match with a 6-3 victory over a strong University of Indianapolis squad Thursday at Star Island Resort.

The Skyhawks wrap up their spring break schedule at 3-1, and improve to 7-1 overall as they enter Northeast-10 Conference competition next week.

Junior Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) was a double winner for Stonehill, as she and sophomore Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) won 8-6 at No. 3 doubles and Toegemann earned a straight-sets 7-5, 6-4 victory over Kelsey Hartman (Rockville, Ind./Rockville) at No. 2 singles.

Senior Lindsey Herchel (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) and sophomore Jacquelyn Harrow (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) claimed an 8-4 victory in the top doubles spot as Stonehill took two of three doubles matches, while junior Leah White (Walpole, Mass./Bishop Feehan) and freshman Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) were defeated for the first time all season by Indianapolis’ Rachel Barger (Decatur, Ind./Adams Central) and Kasey Land (Jasper, Ind./Jasper).

White took down Kim Wasielewski (Prospect Heights, Ill./Nordhoff) in three sets at No. 3 singles, followed by sophomore Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) with a three-set win over Barger at No. 4. Junior Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass./Lee) remains unbeaten in singles play after a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the No. 6 slot. For the second time this week, Martin put up a strong fight in a three-set defeat, taking the Greyhounds’ Claire Liles (Fort Wayne, Ind./Canterbury) to a third-set tiebreaker at No. 5.

Stonehill (7-1, 3-0 NE-10) hosts NE-10 rival Southern New Hampshire University next Wednesday to open the conference schedule.
