Medway, Mass. native has earned award in each week of competition

EASTON, Mass. (March 22, 2011) – Stonehill College freshman Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) has been named the Northeast-10 Conference Women's Tennis Rookie of the Week by the conference office for the week of March 14-20.

Martin, who is honored for the fifth time this season, picked up a pair of doubles victories this week as Stonehill went 3-1 in non-conference competition. She and junior Leah White (Walpole, Mass./Bishop Feehan) continued a dominant season in the No. 2 slot with an 8-6 decision over the U.S. Naval Academy's Natalie Houle and Caitlin Olsen, earning the Skyhawks' only doubles victory against Division I Navy on Tuesday, and cruised to an 8-0 victory over Renee Mattson and Nicole Ardner of Tiffin University on Wednesday. Martin and White are 15-1 in doubles competition this season, winning doubles titles at the Salve Regina Grass Court Doubles Championships and in the B-flight of the USTA/ITA East Regional tournament.

Martin also turned in two tenacious performances in defeats at No. 5 singles this week, taking both opponents to third-set tiebreakers in her only dual-match losses of the season. Facing Olsen for the second time in Tuesday's match against Navy, Martin rebounded after dropping the first set to battle to a 7-6 victory in the second set, winning the tiebreak 7-5 and setting up a ten-point super tiebreak in which Olsen needed 12 points to get past her. She also went to a tiebreak against the University of Indianapolis' Claire Liles on Thursday, falling 7-6 in the decisive third set.

Currently a combined 24-4 in her rookie season, Martin enters the spring NE-10 schedule with a 6-0 overall mark in conference competition. Stonehill (7-1, 3-0 NE-10), currently ranked fourth in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional poll, resumes NE-10 play on Sunday when they host the University of New Haven at 11:00 a.m.
