Herchel, Martin Claim NE-10 Weekly Awards

Senior captain honored as conference's top player after milestone victory

EASTON, Mass. (April 21, 2011) – Stonehill College swept the Northeast-10 Conference weekly women's tennis awards this week as senior Lindsey Herchel (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) was named the Player of the Week and freshman Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) collected her sixth Rookie of the Week honor of the season. The pair were recognized by the conference office for their performances during the final week of the regular season.

Herchel, who earns her first Player of the Week award of the season, led Stonehill to a 3-0 week to close the regular season and clinch the second seed in the NE-10 Women's Tennis Championship. She turned in a combined 6-0 record at No. 1 singles and doubles as the Skyhawks cruised to victories over Merrimack College, Saint Michael's College, and Saint Anselm College to wrap up a 12-1 record in NE-10 Conference play. Herchel collected three straight-sets victories at the No. 1 position to lead Stonehill in singles competition. She also went 3-0 at No. 1 doubles during the week, winning two matches with Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) in their first week playing together, and a third with regular partner Jacquelyn Harrow (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) at Saint Michael's. Herchel and Harrow, who have compiled a 15-6 overall record this season, are ranked 10th in the current Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional poll in doubles competition.

Herchel also achieved a career milestone during the week, as Wednesday's doubles win over Saint Michael's was the 100th career victory for the three-year captain. Her lifetime record in singles and doubles currently stands at 105-58.

Martin was honored as the Rookie of the Week for a conference-leading sixth time this season after a 5-1 week for the Skyhawks. She and doubles partner Leah White (Walpole, Mass./Bishop Feehan) posted a 3-0 record at No. 2, completing a 12-1 regular season in NE-10 play. Martin also cruised to two singles victories over Merrimack and Saint Anselm, dropping only three games throughout the two matches to earn a pair of straight-sets wins. She wraps up the regular season with an 11-2 record in conference matches.

Stonehill (18-2, 12-1 NE-10) has advanced through the semifinals of the NE-10 Women's Tennis Championship as the second seed, and will play for the tournament title Saturday at top-seeded Southern New Hampshire University at noon.
