PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (September 19, 2010) – Stonehill College had a strong day one at the 2010 USTA/ITA Division II Women's East Regional, hosted by Chestnut Hill College and Philadelphia University, today.

Senior captain Lindsey Herchel (Hampden, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) reached the round of 16 in the A-flight singles bracket by posting a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Maria Vitkina from the University of District of Columbia in the opening round. Herchel will open play on Sunday against sixth-seeded Alena Mukdaprokorn from Southern New Hampshire University.

Herchel and sophomore Jacquelyn Harrow (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) were defeated by second-seeded Erika Goldsmith and Andrea Salvetova from Queens (N.Y.) College in the opening round of the A-flight doubles championship. Junior Leah White (Walpole, Mass./Bishop Feehan), who captured the B-flight singles championship last fall, was eliminated in the opening round of the A-singles championship today, falling to fourth-seeded Yuliya Plevako from Concordia College, 6-1, 6-0.

All of Stonehill's entries in the B-flight singles and doubles brackets remain alive heading into Sunday's action. Doubles pairings of White and freshman Kaitlyn Martin (Medway, Mass./Medway) and sophomores Paige Frost (Brigantine, N.J./Holy Spirit) and Chelsea Haedrich (Islip, N.Y./Islip) have both reached the quarterfinal round. Second-seeded White/Martin posted an 8-3 decision over Sam and Kirsten Jean from Southern New Hampshire in the second round after receiving an opening round bye. The duo will face Merrimack College's Madeline Jurlana and Nikki Gloria in tomorrow's quarterfinals. Third-seeded Frost/Haedrich opened with an 8-2 victory over Goldey Beacom College's Luciana and Daniela Periera before edging Lindsay Hammond and Hilary Gall from Georgian Court University in the second round, 8-6. They will now face Danielle Knott and Maria Parapouras from Chestnut Hill in the quarters.

Harrow cruised to an 8-1 win over Georgian Court's Brooke Culver in the B-flight singles opening round and will face Goldey Beacom's Melanie Bonomo in the second round to open Sunday. Haedrich defeated Dorine Sousa from LIU-C.W. Post in the first round, 8-4, and will face Merrimack's Nikki Gloria in the second round tomorrow. Martin opened with an 8-2 victory over Michelle Adamccyk from the University of the Sciences and will take on Gall from Georgian Court tomorrow in the round of 32. Frost topped Hammond from Georgian Court, 8-1, and will face Kristen Jean from Southern New Hampshire tomorrow. Junior Lindsey Simmons (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) has also reached the round of 32 after an 8-1 victory over Daniela Pereira from Goldey Beacom and will next challenge Merrimack's Jeana Frey on Sunday.
