Women's Soccer Falls to Saint Michael’s in Penalty Shootout

Skyhawks will take on Saint Anselm in tomorrow's Catholic Cup consolation match

EASTON, Mass. (September 4, 2015) – After playing to a scoreless draw through 90 minutes of regulation and two ten-minute overtime sessions, the Stonehill College women's soccer team fell to Saint Michael's College, 4-3, in a penalty shootout this afternoon in the first round of the Catholic Cup at Skyhawk Field.

Saint Michael's (0-0-1, 0-0 NE-10) advances to the championship for the first time in the three-year history of the season-opening tournament, where it will take on Assumption College, which defeated Saint Anselm College 2-0 in the other first round matchup today. Stonehill (0-0-1, 0-0 NE-10) and Saint Anselm will get Saturday's action started with the consolation match at noon, followed by the championship contest between the Purple Knights and Greyhounds at 3 p.m.

Stonehill junior goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Massachusetts/Georgetown) was solid in earning her first shutout of the season with a three-save effort, while Saint Michael's senior Kaylee Sullivan (East Greenwich, Rhode Island/East Greenwich) made four stops on the other end.

Stonehill had several opportunities to win the game in the second overtime, as the Skyhawks took two corner kicks and put two shots on goal. Sullivan's most important save came in the 106th minute immediately following a corner kick, when junior back Claire O'Brien (West Hartford, Connecticut/Hall) had her shot from the top of the box deflected over the crossbar.

Senior forward Meagan Elliott (Norton, Massachusetts/Norton) also had a chance to send Stonehill off with a win in the 102nd minute, but her attempt was turned back.

The Skyhawks held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks this afternoon, and also outshot Saint Michael's by a 12-8 margin.
