EASTON, Mass. (September 5, 2015) – The Saint Anselm College women's soccer team broke a scoreless tie late in the second half, edging Stonehill College 1-0 this afternoon in the consolation match of the Catholic Cup at Skyhawk Field.

With the game still tied 0-0 in the 73rd minute, Saint Anselm sophomore forward Alexis Elowitch (Portland, Maine/Deering) was sent on a breakaway following a long clearance from senior midfielder Rachel Gillies (Auburn, Massachusetts/Auburn). Elowitch got behind the Stonehill defense and placed a shot past the dive of Skyhawk junior goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Massachusetts/Georgetown) for the game's only goal.

Despite giving up the goal, Block was impressive for the second consecutive day, making seven saves including several spectacular efforts early in the second half. She kept the game tied at the 45:37 mark, when Saint Anselm freshman forward Corey Murray (Scituate, Massachusetts/Scituate) collected the ball following a Stonehill turnover in the box and had a point blank shot on net.

Three minutes later, Block came up big again with a diving stop on another effort by Murray, who had shaken off a Stonehill defender to create a scoring chance.

Both teams had solid opportunities to take a lead late in the first half, but were unable to convert. Junior back Brianna Duserick (Canton, Massachusetts/Canton) put Stonehill's first shot on net in the 33rd minute, and two minutes later Elowitch fired a shot off the left post.

Saint Anselm junior goalkeeper Cassie Quattropani (East Hartford, Connecticut/East Hartford) started the game for the Hawks and made one save, while freshman Elise Bouchard (Huntingtown, Maryland/Calverton School) saw the first action of her career in the second half, making one stop as well.

Saint Anselm held the advantage in both shots (13-6) and corner kicks (5-2) in the contest, holding the Skyhawks to two shots on goal in the process.

Stonehill (0-1-1, 0-0 NE-10) will look to pick up its first win of the season next Friday afternoon at Molloy College, before traveling to LIU Post for another non-conference contest on Saturday afternoon. Saint Anselm (1-1, 0-0 NE-10) is back in action on Tuesday at Mercy College.
