Skyhawks and Pioneers combine for six second half goals
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (September 12, 2015) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 4-2 setback at LIU Post this afternoon at Pioneer Soccer Park.
The Skyhawks and Pioneers played a scoreless first half before finding their offensive groove in the second half, as the two teams combined for six goals over the final 45 minutes of action.
LIU Post senior forward Susanne Vistnes (Randaberg, Norway/Wang Topidrett) got it started 2:39 into the second half, when she collected a rebound and beat Stonehill junior goalkeeper Jamie Block (Georgetown, Massachusetts/Georgetown) with a shot inside the right post.
Just under nine minutes later, Vistnes struck again, this time sneaking a shot under Block from the left side to give the Pioneers a 2-0 advantage.
Stonehill would cut its deficit in half in the 61st minute, however, as sophomore forward Meredith Moore (Salem, Connecticut/East Lyme) found the back of the net for the first time this season following a scramble in front of the goal. Moore nearly equalized for the Skyhawks five minutes later, but her attempt was saved by LIU Post junior goalkeeper Felicia Orderud (Gothenburg, Sweden/Nosnasgymnasium).
The Pioneers then regained their two-goal cushion in the 74th minute, as graduate midfielder Gabriella Fuduli (East Meadow, New York/East Meadow) found freshman forward Angela Careddu (Flushing, New York/St. Francis Prep) for her first score of the season, before going up 4-1 at the 80:10 mark on sophomore forward Alex Lynn's (Sydney, Australia/Pymble Ladies' College) header.
Stonehill would get one back in closing minutes, as senior forward Meagan Elliott (Norton, Massachusetts/Norton) found freshman forward Meghan Thomasch (Westford, Massachusetts/Westford Academy) with a cross from the right corner. Thomasch headed the ball into the top left corner of the net for the first goal of her collegiate career.
Stonehill (1-2-1, 0-0 NE-10) will now turn its focus to its Northeast-10 Conference slate, which begins on Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. when Franklin Pierce University visits Skyhawk Field. LIU Post (3-1, 0-0 ECC) is back in action on Thursday afternoon at Caldwell University.
