Portland, Oregon, freshman cards program-low 71 to earn first medalist honor in program history

BROCKTON, Mass. (April 11, 2024) – Freshman Helen Brodahl made program history in leading Stonehill College to a second-place team finish at the Skyhawks Senior Showdown on the 5,814-yard, par-70 layout at Thorny Lea Golf Club, marking the first time the program hosted an event on its home course.

Brodahl turned in the first medalist performance in the Stonehill women's golf program's six-year history with a program-best round of one-over-par 71 under heavy, wet and chilly conditions. She bests the previous program low of 74 accomplished twice in program history, last by sophomore teammate Jaelyn DeBoise in the first round of the 2022 Franklin Pierce Fall Invitational and originally scored by Emma Beaulieu, '22 at the 2018 Penmen Columbus Day Invitational.

Brodahl parred the first four holes before a bogey on the par-4 fifth hole, which she got back two holes later with her first of two birdies in her round on the par-4 seventh. She completed the front nine at even par 35, and then added her second birdie of the day on the par-4 12th hole to move under par for her round. Bogeys on the 14th (par-4) and 17th holes (par-3) led her to complete the inward nine in 36 strokes, finishing the round with 13 pars to go with the two birdies.

Brodahl finished atop the individual leaderboard by two strokes over Merrimack College junior Prakruthi Sastry who led three Warriors in the top five with a three-over-par 73. Merrimack, led by the three in the top five and all four scorers in the top six, took the team title with a 306-team score – ten shots under host Stonehill (316). Bryant University finished third at 331.

Freshman Carol Pignato finished tied for fourth with a round of 78, posting a birdie on the par-3 13th hole, to go with eight pars. DeBoise followed in tenth place with an 83 that included two birdies on the 13th and 16th holes (par-4).

Following the round, Stonehill honored the five seniors competing in today's tournament, including Skyhawk seniors Emma Casey and captain Hannah Pignato. Casey shot a 95 in her final collegiate event to finish tied for 18th, while Pignato added a 96 (T-20).
