Women's Tennis Falls on the Road to Le Moyne, 5-2

DEWITT, N.Y. (March 28, 2024) – The Stonehill College women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Northeast Conference opponent Le Moyne College Thursday afternoon. With the loss, the Skyhawks fall to 2-17 overall and 1-5 in conference play, while the Dolphins improve to 6-8 overall and 4-2 against conference opponents. 

Highlights

  • First-year classmates Julie Holte and Madison Warren picked up the lone victories on the day for the Skyhawks.
  • Freshman Ella Fernando, junior Isabella Barona, and sophomore Alicia Alvarez led the way as double winners for Le Moyne.
  • Graduate student Francesca Lilliegren teamed up with Alvarez at the No. 3 slot to clinch the Dolphins' doubles point. 
  • Also earning a singles triumph on the day was sophomore Stella Simeonova at No. 6 singles. 

How It Happened

  • Fernando and Barona took the first match of the day at No. 2 doubles over first-year student Alice Brito do Rio and junior Jenna Gustafson6-1.
  • Clinching the doubles point for the Dolphins would be Alvarez and Lilliegren, playing to a 6-4 decision at No. 3 doubles over sophomore Camila Zuluaga Rodriguez and Warren. 
  • Holte defeated freshman Lillia Raiss, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles to tie the match at one point apiece. 
  • Fernando followed at No. 3 singles, defeating sophomore Anneliese Beltran6-2, 6-2, before Alvarez swept Brito do Rio, 6-3, 6-1, to give the Dolphins a 3-1 lead in the overall match. 
  • Warren would keep the Skyhawks within striking distance after earning her fifth win of the season at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 7-5, over sophomore Paula Casares. 
  • However, Le Moyne would take the final two matchups of singles competition to take home the match victory, 5-2, over Stonehill.

Stonehill (2-17, 1-5 NEC) returns to action on Saturday, April 6, hosting NEC foe Sacred Heart University. Doubles competition between the Skyhawks and Pioneers at the Charles Watt Tennis Courts will begin at 12 p.m.
