HOOKSETT, N.H. (February 10, 2018) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team was unable to get past Southern New Hampshire in a 4-1 loss Saturday afternoon at the Ice Den Arena in Northeast-10 Conference play.
Stonehill (6-16-2, 4-9-1 NE10) saw junior Christopher Page (Winthrop, Massachusetts/Winthrop) notch his fifth goal of the season and seventh of his career, while sophomore Cameron Wright (West Dummerston, Vermont/Vermont Academy) picked up his 10th assist of the season and 21st of his career. Junior goaltender Billy Palmer (Cranston, Rhode Island/Boston Bandits – USPHL Premier) registered 39 saves in the loss.
Southern New Hampshire University (12-6-3, 6-5-2 NE10) saw four different goal scorers in the victory, including Chris Moquin, DJ Goldstein, Griffin Rogers, and Timothy Baylis. Brett Strawn chipped in two assists, as Matt McLelland, Moquin, Artem Efimov-Barakov, and Kyle Galloway each registered on helper. Goaltender Ryan Slatky stopped 49 shots in his sixth victory of the season.
Stonehill had the shot advantage in the first period, 15-10, however neither team was able to get a tally on the board with both goaltenders holding the defense together.
Even though the Skyhawks were able to get off a game-high 23 shots in the second period, the Penmen took a 2-0 lead with goals at 7:04 by Goldstein and 12:53 from Rogers. Stonehill's Page cut the deficit to one, 2-1, with his fifth goal of the season with a helper from Wright at 18:35. Neither team was able to capitalize on power plays as they both went 0-for-2 at the end of the second frame.
Five minutes into the third period, the Penmen put another one in the back of the cage, after the Skyhawks went on a run of shots in the four-minute mark. Moquin slid one past Palmer at 5:14 with helpers from Strawn and McLelland for his 19th of the season. Stonehill was called for the lone penalty in the third period at 9:24, and Southern New Hampshire was able to capitalize on the man advantage as Baylis slapped the puck at 10:34 for a one timer and his second of the season to put the Penmen up 4-1. Southern New Hampshire held the shot advantage, 15-12, in the final frame, as Stonehill was able to get two sets of four-straight shots off before time expired.
The Skyhawks wrap up the regular season hosting Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday, February 13 with a 7:00 p.m. opening faceoff, as the Skyhawks will honor their three seniors prior to the game.
