Ice Hockey Dominates in 4-1 Victory Over Post


Schoen starts in his first-collegiate game and earns his first victory

Cassidy and Maloney lead Skyhawks with three points each

SHELTON, Conn. (November 28, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team earned its second-straight win with a 4-1 victory over non-conference foe Post University Tuesday night at the Sports Center of Connecticut.

For Stonehill, (4-3-1, 2-1-1 NE10) saw Conor Cassidy (Wilmington, Delaware/Canterbury and Kents Hill) record two goals in the win, while James Varney (Smithfield, Maine/Walpole Express – EHL Premier), and Shamus Maloney (North Attleboro, Massachusetts/Neponset Rover Valley Rats) each tallied one goal each. Connor Collier (Madison, New Jersey/New Jersey Hitmen - USPHL) and Maloney also notched two assists each, while Cassidy, Connor Jewett (Berlin, New Hampshire/NH Junior Monarchs – EHL Premier), Nicholas Godin (New London, New Hampshire/Tabor Academy), and Connor Tedesco (Winchester, Massachusetts/Proctor Academy) each picked up one assist. Sophomore netminder Matthew Schoen (Tolland, Connecticut/Phillips Academy) picked up his first win in his first start as a Skyhawks as he also registered 38 saves.

Post (0-8-0) saw Evan Lugo tally the lone goal, as Christopher Harris and Tyler Hackett notched the helpers. The Eagles' goaltender, Brandon Brown recorded 38 saves.

After a faceoff won by Stonehill in the first seven minutes of play, Post's offense stole the puck as Lugo found the back of the cage at 7:13 with assists from Harris and Hackett. The Skyhawks wouldn't let that lead stay for long, as they were able to notch the equalizer 28 seconds later, at 7:41. Cassidy put the dish past Brown for his third goal of the season with help from Tedesco and Maloney. Both teams registered five shots each before Stonehill saw its first lead of the game at 11:39 with Maloney's sixth goal of the season and first three-point game. Cassidy and Godin each notched their third helpers of the season.

Post started the second period off with three successful face-offs and three shots, with two saved by Schoen and one blocked by Cassidy. Later in the frame, Stonehill extended its lead to two goals, 3-1, after Varney slapped the puck into the back of the cage for his first tally of his career. Jewett helped in the goal with a shot prior that was saved by Brown, and Collier also assisted with his second assist of the season.

The Skyhawks wouldn't let up, as Cassidy recorded his 16th goal of his career and second of the game at 13:53 in the second period. Collier and Maloney assisted in the three-goal lead, 4-1. Post won the previous three face-offs, as they also recorded four shots on goal to Stonehill's two prior to the final goal of the game.

The Skyhawks outshot the Eagles 42-39, as Post won 46 face-offs to Stonehill's 31.

Stonehill hosts non-conference rival UMass Dartmouth at the Foxboro Sports Center with a opening faceoff at 5:10 p.m. on Saturday, December 2.
