BOSTON, Mass. (January 12, 2018) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team was tripped up in the second and third periods by Northeast-10 Conference foe Saint Anselm College's offense, dropping the first game of a three-game series, 5-0, at Warrior Ice Arena Friday night.

Stonehill (4-9-1, 2-3-1 NE10) saw Matthew Schoen (Tolland, Connecticut/Phillips Academy) stop 33 saves in his third-collegiate start, while the team notched 26 shots in the loss.

Saint Anselm (6-7-1, 3-2-0 NE10) saw Mike Ferraro rip two goals, while Matt Chisholm, Liam O'Sullivan, and Trey Aiello each contributed one tally. Nick Gorski, Justin Longo, Michael Foggia, Bryan Green, John Fernia, and Aiello each chipped in an assist for the Hawks' third conference win of the year. Senior goaltender Shayne Joyce tallied his third shutout and the team's fourth shutout of the season, while saving all 26 shots from the Skyhawks.

Saint Anselm took 15 of the 20 shots on goal in the first period, as neither team was able put one in the back of the net.

Late in the second period, the Hawks were able to kickstart a rally with a power play goal from Ferraro at 13:24 with assists from Gorski and Green. Less than two minutes later, Ferraro was able take the puck away from the Skyhawks offense, skating past defenders and sailed the dish past Schoen for an unassisted breakaway at 15:15 for a 2-0 lead. Aiello followed Ferraro's two goal show with a tally of his own at 17:59, as the Hawks were shorthanded from a penalty that started at 16:34.

The third period jumpstarted with Stonehill's fifth penalty of the night, as the Skyhawks were able to dump the puck in their defensive third, killing the penalty. At 6:13, O'Sullivan added to the Hawks' total, as Longo and Fernia chipped in the helpers for a 4-0 advantage. Later in the frame, Chisholm notched Saint Anselm's second shorthanded goal of the game at 12:42 with assists from Foggia and Aiello.

Saint Anselm was able to fend off Stonehill in its five power plays, as the Hawks capitalized on one of its six power plays in the victory.

The Skyhawks host the Hawks for the second game of the series on Saturday, January 13 with a puck drop at 8:30 p.m. at Warrior Ice Arena in Boston, Massachusetts.
