EASTON, Mass. (November 5, 2022) – Stonehill College saw five different players reach the end zone and racked up almost 400-yards rushing in returning to the win column with a 50-10 triumph over Wagner College in a Northeast Conference (NEC) football matchup on Timothy J. Coughlin, '80 Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.

Junior running back Jermaine Corbett paced the Stonehill rushing attack with a season-high 227 yards on 16 carries with three touchdowns as he averaged 14.2 yards per carry for the game. He posted the second 200-yard rushing game of his career and surpassed 100-yards for the third time this season (fourth career), scoring on touchdown runs of 32, 59 and 74 yards on the day.

Junior Matt Arvanitis added 88 yards on 11 carries with a score, while classmate Tom Comella reached the end zone twice on six touches as Stonehill finished the day with 399 rushing yards, averaging 9.5 yards on its rushing plays, of the 617 yards of total offense it recorded for the afternoon, marking the Skyhawks first 600-yard day since posting a program-record 662 against MIT on October 2, 1994.

Corbett: 16 carries, 227 yards, 3 touchdowns, 14.2 yards per carry.

Sophomore quarterback Ashur Carraha: 11-for-19 for 195 yards and a touchdown.

Junior wide receiver Will Diamantis: Two receptions for a career-high 91 yards and a 69-yard touchdown catch.

Senior linebacker Steve Cmielewski: Career-high 14 tackles (three solo), including 0.5 for a loss of two yards.

Junior defensive end David Fuller-Williams: Six tackles (three solo), including 2.0 sacks for a loss of seven and a pass breakup.

Wagner

Junior wide receiver Naiem Simmons: Five receptions, 58 yards and a touchdown.

Freshman quarterback Damiel Mazil : 12-for-21 for 120 yards and a touchdown, one interception, sacked four times.

Senior defensive back Coby Calvin: Nine tackles (five solo).

How it Happened

  • Both teams scored on their opening possessions, but it was Stonehill with an early edge as the Skyhawks answered a 21-yard Wagner field goal by sophomore Austin Hosier with a touchdown in just six plays, capped by Corbett's first score of the day on a 32-yard run with 7:42 to play in the opening frame.
  • Corbett extended the Stonehill lead to 14-3 with 25-seconds left in the quarter with a 59-yard touchdown run on fourth and an inch, to cap a seven-play, 78-yard drive.
  • Wagner pulled back within four (14-10) with a seven play, 66-yard drive, capped by a one-yard touchdown toss from Mazil to Simmons less than three minutes into the second quarter.
  • Stonehill would follow with 17-straight points before halftime on its way to 36 unanswered points to win its second NEC game of the season running away.
  • Comella closed out a nine-play, 55-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown jaunt, before Diamantis hauled in a Carraha pass and raced 69-yards for a score with 2:59 remaining, one play after Wagner turned the ball over on downs.
  • Junior Perry Shelbred sent Stonehill into the lockerroom with a 31-10 halftime lead with a 34-yard field goal with just one second left in the half.
  • Corbett capped his touchdown hat trick with a 74-yard run (the longest of his career) with 5:33 remaining in the third quarter, one play after Wagner missed on a 37-yard field goal.
  • Comella added his second touchdown from a yard out 1:31 into the fourth at the end of an eight play, 68-yard drive, before Arvanitis capped the scoring with a 12-yard run with five minutes left to close out a ten play, 68-yard possession.

Noteworthy

  • Stonehill limited Wagner to 291 total yards for the afternoon, holding the Seahawks scoreless in the second half.
  • Stonehill scored 50 points at W.B. Mason Stadium for the sixth time (second this season), while holding its third-straight opponent under 20 points (fourth overall).
  • Corbett's 74-yard touchdown run is the seventh-longest rush in W.B. Mason Stadium history and is Stonehill's first 70-yard run since All-American Justin Felder, '22 had a 77-yard carry against Franklin Pierce University last season.
  • Corbett, Diamantis and Carraha combined to record the three-longest plays of the season for Stonehill this fall with Corbett's 59 and 74-yard touchdowns, as well as the 69-yard score by Diamantis from Carraha.
  • Corbett matched his season and career-high with three touchdowns this afternoon, marking the 21st time in Stonehill history a player has rushed for three scores in a game.
  • Corbett's 227 rushing yards is the eighth-highest total in program history and eighth largest total in W.B. Mason Stadium – the sixth-highest by a Skyhawk.
  • Stonehill's 617 total yards is a W.B. Mason Stadium record, surpassing the previous high of 566 yards by Bloomsburg University on August 31, 2012. The 399 rushing yards surpassed the facility record of 376 by Stonehill against Pace University on October 15, 2011.
  • Corbett surpassed 1,000 career rushing yards today (1,128) and moved within 140 yards of cracking the program's career top ten, while his 14 career touchdown rushes rank ninth all-time.
  • Cmielewski posted his third double-figure tackle game of the season.
  • Stonehill improves to 3-0 all-time against Wagner, having notched a pair of wins in 2008 and 2009 prior to this afternoon.

Stonehill (3-3, 2-3 NEC) hits the road next Saturday, when it visits Long Island University in Brookville, New York, for an NEC matchup at 1 p.m. The Skyhawks return to W.B.
