Stonehill Outlasts Felician, 5-3

Five-run seventh leads Stonehill past Felician

Winter Park, Fla. (March 2, 2013) – The Stonehill College baseball team defeated Felician College 5-3 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference matchup on the campus of Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.

Sophomore Jim Duff (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) pitched six and one-third innings and earned the win for Stonehill. Duff gave up five hits and three runs (two earned) and collected seven strikeouts in his second outing of the season.

Freshman Mike Krupczak (Springfield, Mass/Cathedral) pitched one and a third innings of relief, striking out one batter in the process. Junior Armand Rugel (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) collected his third save of the season. Rugel pitched an inning and a third giving up two hits and striking out one batter.

Dean Loucka (Wood-Ridge, N.J./Wood-Ridge) was tabbed with the loss for the Golden Falcons. Loucka pitched one innings and gave up two runs on two walks. Sophomore Jerry Vasto (Atl, Highlands, N.J./Henry Hudson Regional) went five innings in the start for Felician. Vasto walked seven batters but held Stonehill hitless in the start. Jack Fowler (Shrewsbury, N.J./Red Bank Regional) pitched two innings of relief, giving up three runs on five hits. Fowler struck out four batters for the Golden Falcons.

Felician took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when Aaron Brill (West Palm Beach, Fla./John I. Leonard) tripled and later scored on a wild pitch.

Stonehill responded three innings later, scoring five runs in the stanza. With runners on first and second, James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) gave Stonehill the lead when he hit a two-RBI single, scoring Brian Campbell (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles).

Two batters later, Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) hit an RBI double to make it 3-2. Following Fratus, Anthony Pagano (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) hit a two-RBI double to put the Skyhawks up 5-1.

The Golden Falcons fought back in the bottom of the inning. After Matt Caposio (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by-the-Sea) reached on an error to score Jonathan Arche (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson), Gabriel Fellin hit an RBI single to cut Stonehill's lead to 5-3.

Felician would get no closer, as Krupczak and Rugel held the Golden Falcons scoreless the rest of the way to lock up the game for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill (5-1, 0-0 NE-10), which is among teams receiving votes in the NCBWA top-25 poll, faces Assumption College Sunday night at 6:00 pm. Felician will take on Rollins College in its next game, Sunday night at 6:00 pm.
