Franklin Pierce Sweeps Stonehill, 6-1 and 8-4

RINDGE, N.H. (April 20, 2013) – The Stonehill College baseball team fell to the Franklin Pierce Ravens in a pair of games Saturday afternoon in a Northeast-10 Conference double-header at Pappas Field in Rindge, N.H.

Junior pitcher Kevin McGowan (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North) tossed eight innings to earn his fifth win of the season for the Ravens. McGowan held Stonehill to one run on eight hits and one walk, while striking out six. Sophomore Doug Willey (Shelburne, N.H./Gorham) pitched a scoreless ninth to close the game for Franklin Pierce.

Sophomore Jim Duff (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) was tagged with the loss for Stonehill. Duff went four innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits and three walks, while striking out three. Ryan Rougeot (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) relieved Duff and pitched the final four innings for the Skyhawks. Rougeot held the Ravens to one run on four hits, earning one strikeout in the process.

Leading the way for Franklin Pierce was sophomore Matt Walsh (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North). Walsh went 2-for-4 with two home runs and two RBI. Senior Dan Kemp (Sturbridge, Mass./Tentasqua) also hit a homer for the Ravens.

Senior captain James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) paced the Skyhawks offense with a 3-for-4 game. DeAlto notched two singles, a double, and an RBI for Stonehill. Freshman Brian Campbell (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles) also posted three hits for the Skyhawks, who notched nine hits in the loss.

Franklin Pierce got the scoring started with one run in the bottom of the first. With one out in the inning, Kemp stepped to the plate and launched his third home run of the season to put the Ravens up 1-0.

After the Ravens added a run in the third, they put up three more in the fourth to make it 5-0. Walsh led off the inning with a solo home run to right field before Justin Brock (Latham, N.Y./Albany Academy) laced a RBI-triple to right field. Brock later scored on a wild pitch to give the Ravens a five-run lead.

The Skyhawks launched a comeback bid in the top of the eighth inning. Matt Anziano (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) got things started when he roped a double to right center field. Following a single to right, DeAlto scored Anziano when he hit an RBI-single to right field. The Ravens stopped the threat, retiring the next three Skyhawks in order to escape the jam.

Franklin Pierce got a home run from Walsh in the eighth to extend its lead to 6-1 before closing out the Skyhawks in the ninth for the victory.

Junior pitcher Ryan Leach (Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale) tossed 6.1 innings of relief to pick up the win for the Ravens. Leach gave up three earned runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out five to earn his fourth victory of the season. Willey yielded just one hit over 1.1 innings of work to earn his third save of the year for Franklin Pierce.

Junior Zach Soulier (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) gave up five earned runs and took the loss for Stonehill in game two. Soulier was tagged for five hits and two walks, but struck out five in the outing. Freshman John Hauck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) pitched a scoreless inning of relief for Stonehill.

Walsh and junior Calvin Graves (Boston, Mass./West Roxbury) led the way for Franklin Pierce in game two. Walsh hit his third homer of the day, while Graves knocked in a pair of runs on a 2-for-4 game.

Junior Anthony Pagano (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) registered a 2-for-3 performance with a double, a home run, and four RBI to pilot Stonehill's offense in game two.

The Skyhawks this time jumped out to the early 1-0 lead. With Campbell on second following a walk and a single, Pagano hit an RBI-double down the left field line to make it 1-0.

Franklin Pierce responded with four runs in the second inning to take the lead. Walsh launched his third home run of the day, a solo shot to left field, to get things started. Four batters later, Graves hit a two-run double to left center field. Kemp added the final run of the inning when he singled through the left side.

Stonehill got three runs in the sixth to tie the score. Following back-to-back singles by Campbell and Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North), Pagano launched his first home run to left center field to knot the score at four.

The Ravens quickly responded to regain the lead in the bottom of the sixth. With a runner on third and two outs, Brock bunted a RBI-single to first base to score the fifth run of the game for the Ravens.

Franklin Pierce added three runs in the bottom of the seventh to make it 8-4. With runners on second and third, junior Marty Dunlap (Dorchester, Mass./Western Oklahoma State College) singled home the sixth run of the game for the Ravens. The next batter, Matt O'Herron (Springfield, Mass.), drove in two more when he singled to center field, making it 8-4 Ravens.

Willey then came in to lock it up for the Ravens, getting the Skyhawks to ground into a double-play to end the game in the ninth.

The Skyhawks (20-16, 6-6 NE-10 Northeast) and Ravens (26-12, 9-3 NE-10 Northeast) return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 pm for the final game of this three-game series.
