Skyhawks Fall to Pace in Extras, 8-6

Pace scores three in the 10th to down the Skyhawks

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 17, 2013) – The Stonehill College baseball team lost an extra-inning game to the Pace University Setters in a non-conference matchup at Alfond Stadium on the campus of Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.

Senior Joe Solomeno (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run to lead Pace. Junior Chris Gili (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport-South Manor) and Brandon Martineson (Prospect, KY/Warwick (N.Y.)) also had RBIs in the win for the Setters.

Freshman Brian Campbell (Franklin, Mass./Mount Saint Charles) had five hits and an RBI for the Skyhawks. Junior Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) and freshman Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) chipped in with RBIs of their own for Stonehill.

Dylan Mouzakes (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills) recorded the victory for Pace. Mouzakes pitched 1.1 innings, giving up one run (zero earned) on four hits and a walk. Sophomore pitcher Tim Deegan (Levittown, N.Y./Island Trees) registered the save for Pace, going two-thirds of an inning and holding the Skyhawks scoreless.

Junior Armond Rugel (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) was saddled with the loss for Stonehill. Rugel pitched 2.1 innings of relief, giving up five runs (four earned) on five hits and a walk. Freshman Mike Krupczak (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) started for Stonehill and pitched seven innings. Krupczak gave up three runs (two earned) on three hits, while striking out four. 

The Skyhawks got the scoring started in the third inning to take an early lead. Anthony Pagano (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) earned a lead-off walk and was moved to third on a fielder's choice and a sacrifice bunt. Hoyt put Stonehill on the board with a sacrifice fly to right field, plating Pagano for a 1-0 lead.

Stonehill added to its lead in the fourth inning. Fratus walked and advanced to third after back-to-back singles by Michael Zeiner (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) and Campbell. Pagano made it 2-0 when he hit a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Setters got one back in the top of the fifth. With Ian Wukitsch (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) on third base following an error by the second baseman and a balk, Bobby Horn (Samford, Conn./Westhill) earned an RBI when he drove in Wukitsch with a groundout.

After Stonehill made it 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth, the Setters tied it up in the sixth. With runners on first and second with one out, Solomeno launched a two-run double to left field to tie the game.

The Setters took the lead for the first time in the top of the eighth. With a man on first, Martineson tripled to center to give the Setters a 4-3 edge. James Pjura (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) added the fifth run for Pace when he hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Martineson.

Stonehll responded in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game. James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) hit a lead-off single, making way for a Fratus RBI triple to right center field, cutting the lead to one. Campbell tied it up when he singled home Fratus two batters later.

After a scoreless ninth, the game moved to extra innings. Pace jumped ahead for good in the top of the tenth. After back-to-back singles from Pjura and Solomeno, Wukitsch broke the tie with an RBI single. Gili added two insurance runs when he hit a two-run double.

The Skyhawks threatened in the bottom of the tenth, but Deegan shut them down and closed the door for a Setters' victory.

Stonehill (12-6, 0-0 NE-10) returns to action Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 pm for a game with Bentley. Next up for Pace (8-5, 0-0 NE-10) is a non-conference matchup with Queens College, Wednesday at 3:00 pm.
