Six-run fifth helps Golden Eagles fly past Skyhawks
Winter Park, Fla. (March 5, 2013) – The Stonehill College baseball team, ranked 21st in this week's National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II poll released today, fell to the Felician College Golden Falcons 11-5 in a non-conference matchup Tuesday afternoon on the campus of Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla.
Jay Collazo (Wall Township, N.J./Manasquan) and Mike Farrell (Red Bank, N.J./Middletown South) posted three RBIs each to lead the Golden Falcons. Collazo went 2-2 with a two-RBI double, while Farrell went 3-5 with two doubles and two runs for Felician, which moves to 6-8 on the season with the win.
Junior Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) went two for five and earned an RBI for the Skyhawks. James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) also recorded three RBIs on the day for Stonehill, moving his total to seven on the season.
Matthew Facendo (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) pitched seven innigs, yielding two earned runs on five hits and five walks. The Golden Falcons' starter struck out four Skyhawks and held Stonehill scoreless until the fifth inning. Chris Falcone (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by-the-Sea) pitched the final two innings for Felician, giving up three earned on five hits and one walk, while striking out two batters.
Freshman John Hauck (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn-Trafford) earned the loss for Stonehill. Hauck was charged with eight runs (seven earned) in four innings of work. Christian Baglini (Milford, Conn./Notre Dame High) pitched two innings of relief, giving up one run on four hits in just his second pitching appearance of the season. Steve Pike (Stoughton, Mass./Catholic Memorial) also pitched two innings, allowing two runs on one hit.

Tied 0-0 after three, the Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. After Farrell singled to left field, Scott DeJong (North Haledon, N.J./Eastern Christian) hit an RBI triple to deep center, bringing home Farrell. Collazo then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, which scored DeJong and gave Felician a 2-0 advantage.
Stonehill responded in the fifth, grabbing two runs of their own to tie the score 2-2. James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) brought home Matt Anziano (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) for Stonehill's first run when he grounded into a double play. Billy Karalis (Pawtucket, R.I./Bishop Feehan) then singled home Chris Callahan (Southington, Conn./Holy Cross High) to knot the score at two.
Felician tallied six runs in the bottom of the inning to take a commanding lead. Brill notched an RBI single to give the Golden Eagles a 3-2 advantage. Farrell extended the lead to four when he launched a bases-clearing double to right center field. Two batters later Collazo made it 8-2 when he brought home Farrell and DeJong with a double of his own.
The Golden Falcons would extend their lead to 11-2 with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
In the ninth inning, Stonehill attempted a late comeback. With the bases loaded and one out DeAlto singled through the right side, plating Brett Matzen (Baskeing Ridge, N.J./Ridge) and Eric Schneider (Camarillo, Calif./St. Bonaventure). Two batters later Fratus hit an RBI double to center field to cut the lead to 11-5. Felician halted Stonehill's comeback bid there when Falcone struck out Anthony Pagano (Cranston, R.I./Cranston West) to seal the win for the Golden Falcons.
Stonehill (7-3, 0-0 NE-10) and Felician (6-8, 0-0 CACC) face off again tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 pm as the Skyhawks and Golden Falcons continue competition in the 65th Annual Rollins College Baseball Week.
