WEST HAVEN, Conn. (March 24, 2013) – The Stonehill College baseball team was swept by the University of New Haven in a double-header Sunday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field in West Haven Conn.
New Haven 12, Stonehill 10
Five-run eighth helps New Haven take game one.
Senior Joe Romanelli (Baldwin, N.Y./Holy Trinity) collected three hits and four RBIs to lead the way for the Chargers. Junior Chris DeMorais (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) and Brendon Buckley (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) also posted multi-RBI efforts for New Haven.
Senior Michael Zeiner (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs to pace the Skyhawks. Freshman Christina Baglini (Milford, Conn./Notre Dame High) and James DeAlto (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Briarcliff) also posted multi-hit games for Stonehill.
Taylor Candage (Portland, Maine/Deering) was the pitcher of record for New Haven. Candage gave up three runs on four hits in one inning of work. Senior Peter Jay (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) pitched a scoreless, hitless ninth to earn the save for the Chargers. Senior Frank Vilacha (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) started and went six innings, but earned the no decision. Vilacha gave up four earned runs on nine hits, but struck out five for New Haven.
Freshman Mike Krupczak (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) was charged with the loss for Stonehill. Krupczak gave up four earned runs on three hits in one inning. Junior Zach Soulier (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) got the start, going six innings and yielding four runs (three earned) on nine hits. Soulier struck out six batters in the game.
New Haven opened the scoring in the bottom of the first. With Brendan O'Reilly (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) on second after a double, DeMorais hit an RBI single through the right side to plate O'Reilly.
Stonehill responded with three runs in the second inning. With runners on first and third, Baglini tied the game when he hit an RBI-single to center field. Chris Hoyt (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) followed with an RBI single, giving Stonehill its first lead of the game. DeAlto made it 3-1 when he singled home Baglini.
New Haven tied the game up in the bottom of the third inning. After O'Reilly scored on a wild pitch, Romanelli knotted the game with an RBI single to center field.
After the Chargers took the lead in the fourth, Stonehill tied the game in the sixth. After Matt Anziano (Belchertown, Mass./Belchertown) singled to right field, Baglini hit an RBI-triple to right field, making it 4-4.
The Skyhawks scored three runs in the seventh to regain the lead. Junior Billy Karalis (Pawtucket, R.I./Bishop Feehan) and Dan Fratus (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) hit back-to-back singles, making way for Zeiner's two-run double. Two batters later, Anthony Pagano (Cranston, R.I/Cranston West) drove in Zeiner when he grounded out to the first baseman, making it 7-4.
The Chargers knotted up the game in the bottom half of the seventh. With runners on second and third, DeMorais hit a two-run double to right center field, cutting the lead to one. Romanelli tied it when he drove in DeMorais with an RBI-single.
With three more runs in the eighth, Stonehill took back the lead. Hoyt singled through the left side, DeAlto doubled to left field, and Karalis walked to make way for Fratus. Fratus broke the tie with an RBI single through the left side. The next batter, Zeiner, added two more runs for Stonhill when he doubled down the right line to give the Skyhawks a 10-7 advantage.
The Chargers rallied to regain the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded and one out, Buckley knocked in two runs with a double down the right field line. O'Reilly tied up the game when he singled home another run. Two batters later, Romanelli broke the tie when he singled home O'Reilly and Buckley.

The Skyhawks were shut down in the ninth when Jay posted a 1-2-3 inning.
New Haven 4, Stonehill 1
Simone goes eight strong as the Chargers complete the sweep.
Junior pitcher Pat Simone (Branford, Conn./Branford) pitched eight innings to earn the victory for New Haven. Simone held the Skyhawks to one run (zero earned) on five hits and struck out four. Jason Lewicki (Milford, Conn./Foran) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the save for the Chargers. Lewicki retired all three batters he faced.
Sophomore Jim Duff (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) took the loss for the Skyhawks. Duff pitched seven innings, giving up four runs (two earned) on four hits and one walk, while striking out eight on the afternoon. Steve Pike (Stoughton, Mass./Catholic Memorial) came in and pitched a scoreless eighth for Stonehill.
With a runner on second and two outs, DeMorais reached on an error by the shortstop, to put the Chargers up 1-0. DeMorais scored two batters later on a throwing error by the pitcher.
New Haven added a run in the fifth to cushion its lead to 3-0. Stephen Clout (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Eastern) hit an RBI single to give the Chargers a three-run lead.
The Skyhawks got one back in the eighth inning to cut the lead to 3-1. Brian Hocking (Duxbury, Mass./BC High) opened the inning with a single to left field before Anziano singled him over to third. Hocking scored on a passed ball two pitches later.
The Chargers would not be denied though, adding a fourth run in the eighth and shutting the Skyhawks down in the ninth.
Stonehill (12-8, 0-2 NE-10) returns to action Wednesday afternoon when it travels to face Bentley University at 3:30 pm. Next up for New Haven is a NE-10 matchup with Pace University, Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 pm.
