Skyhawks SB Downed by UMaine in DH

EASTON, Massachusetts (April 26, 2023)- Today, the Stonehill College softball team hosted a non-conference doubleheader against the Black Bears of the University of Maine, where the Skyhawks battled till the end, but lost to Maine in both games.

Game 1: The Skyhawks played their first game of the day with a 3 p.m. start, having the game cut short to the fifth inning via the mercy rule, losing with a score of 0-9.

Key Moments:                           

  • The Skyhawks fought hard throughout game one but could not make it past the Black Bear defense. Stonehill wasn't able to make it home and lost the first game.
  • In the top of the first inning, the Skyhawks were able to stop Maine from making it on base.
  • In the bottom of the third inning, centerfielder Natalie Bottiglieri stepped up to the plate and hit a single to left field, making it to first. Then, Bottiglieri makes it to second off of a single in the infield from shortstop Emily Nardelli. But, the centerfielder was thrown out at third off of a hit from first basemen Paige Wodarski.
  • Still in the bottom of the third, catcher Isabella Therrien hit a single to left center, advancing Wodarski to second and Nardelli to third, before the inning was ended shortly after.
  • Pitching for the Skyhawks, Skylar Brandemarte threw in the first half of the game, throwing 21 strikes. In the second half of the game, Lauren Donovan took over and threw seven strikes before the end of the game.

Loss: Stonehill-  Skylar Brandemarte (40-21), Lauren Donovan (20-7)


Game 2: The Skyhawks played their second game of the day right after with stronger hitting, putting four runs on the board for Stonehill, but losing 4-9.

Key Moments:                           

  • Trailing behind the Black Bears, the Skyhawks weren't able to make it home until the bottom of the fifth inning, where second basemen Courtney Brochu reached first on a fielder's choice, advancing third basemen Shannon Conte to second and sending Therrien home to put the Skyhawks at 1-7.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning, with Nardelli on second and right fielder Megan Weis on third, catcher Jessica Brill grounded out to second base, earning a SAC while sending Weis home to score, also earning an RBI.
  • Shortly after, Therrien singled to shortstop, making it to first base and sending Nardelli home to put the Skyhawks at 3-9.
  • In the bottom of the seventh inning, Brochu hit a deep double to right center, starting the hitting of strong for the team. Right after, with pinch-runner Chloe Kelly on second, left-fielder Alexa Adinolfi singled to center field, sending Kelly home to score and end the game with a score of 4-9.
  • Starting off in the circle, Kelly Mayette threw two strikeouts and 14 strikes. Taking over in the second inning, pitcher Skylar Brandemarte threw 25 strikes.

Loss: Stonehill- Kelly Mayette (35-14), Skylar Brandemarte (48-25)

 

Up Next:

The Softball team is back in action on Friday, April 28th in New Britain, Connecticut to play in a Northeast Conference doubleheader against Central Connecticut State University at 2 p.m. & 4 p.m., finishing off the 2023 season for Skyhawks.
