Skyhawk Softball Finish Doubleheader Against FAU

BOCA RATON, Florida. (March 7, 2023)- The Stonehill College softball team traveled to Boca Raton, Florida to play in a doubleheader against Florida Atlantic University. The Skyhawks battled hard, scoring a single run in each game.

GAME 1: In the first game against FAU, the Skyhawks started the game with a lead, but had the game cut short by an FAU grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning, finishing the game with a loss of 1-11 in five innings.

  • Maeve ProulxPR with a score

Key Moments:

  • To start the top of the second inning, Stonehill's designated player Paige Wodarski was walked to first base, with pinch-runner Maeve Proulx stepping in.
  • Shortly after, shortstop Emily Nardelli singled to the left side, advancing Proulx to second base. 
  • The next batter up was catcher Isabella Therrien, who stepped up to the plate and hit a single to center field and bringing in Proulx for an RBI, giving the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead.
  • The infield was huge for the Skyhawks, making multiple plays to catch some outs for the Skyhawks.
  • In the first three innings, pitcher Lauren Donovan pitched for the Skyhawks, throwing 17 strikes. In the bottom of the fourth inning, pitcher Kelly Mayette took over to pitch the rest of the game, throwing 9 strikes before the game was cut short in the fifth inning.

GAME 2: In the second game of the doubleheader against FAU, the Skyhawks fought hard, scoring only one run in the game, finishing the game with a loss of 1-6 in seven innings.

Standout Performances:

Key Moments:

  • In the top of the second inning, second basemen Courtney Brochu reached first base on a fielding error from FAU, with pinch-runner Maeve Proulx stepping in. 
  • After that, DP Paige Wodarski made a hit in the infield before being thrown out at first, which allowed Proulx to advance to second.
  • Next up was shortstop Emily Nardelli, who was walked to first base, setting up the Skyhawks to score with two outs.
  • Shortly after, catcher Isabella Therrien made her mark again, as she singled up the middle and advanced to second on an overthrow by FAU, which allowed pinch runner Proulx to advance to third, quickly running home to score on a throwing error by the FAU shortstop. With Proulx making it home, shortstop Nardelli could advance to third, leaving the Skyhawks trailing by one run.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, FAU was up to bat, where the Florida team attempted to steal third base, but not before catcher, Therrien threw out FAU at third, making that the second out of the inning.
  • Both second basemen Brochu and shortstop Nardelli were essential during the game, catching multiple outs and creating multiple plays for the Skyhawks
  • Throwing for the entirety of the game, pitcher Skylar Brandemarte pitched for the Skyhawks, throwing 63 strikes and three strikeouts, being a vital force for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill is on the field again on March 8th at 2 p.m. & 4 p.m. for a doubleheader against Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers, Florida. After that, the Skyhawks finish their time in Florida and head back to the northeast, where they will play their next game against UMass Lowell in Lowell, Massachusetts in a doubleheader matchup on March 15th at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
