Stonehill Softball Ends Day 2 of FIU Classic in Miami

MIAMI, Florida. (March 4, 2023)- The Stonehill College softball team stayed in Miami, Florida to continue to play in the FIU Classic, hosted by Florida International University, which wraps up tomorrow afternoon. The Skyhawks finished the second day of the tournament in the sunshine state, where the team started off playing at 10 a.m. to see where the team will end up seeding for the elimination round of the tournament.

GAME 1: They finished the seeding portion of the tournament with a game against the University of Nevada, where the Skyhawks were defeated 11-0 and played five innings.

Key Moments:

  • In the top of the third inning, right fielder Natalie Bottiglieri hit a single, making it to first. Nevada attempted to throw Bottiglieri out at first, but made a throwing error, leaving the right fielder to make it to third.
  • As the Skyhawks took to the field at the bottom of the third inning, Nevada hit a high ball in the infield, and second basemen Courtney Brochu caught the hit in a diving catch, snagging an out for the Skyhawks.
  • At the top of the fourth inning, the Skyhawks were up to bat, with Shannon Conte hitting a single to center field, and being left on base after the end of the inning.

Win: Nevada- B. Trujillo (58-35)

Loss: Stonehill- Kelly Mayette (111-57), Molly Adamo (11-8)

 

GAME 2: After the final game of the seeding process, the Skyhawks continued on later this evening at 5:30 p.m. to play against the University of Nevada again, as the Skyhawks were the fourth seed and Nevada was the number one seed. In this night game, the Skyhawks played six innings total and had another loss against Nevada with a score of 8-0.

Key Moments:

  • At the top of the first inning, the second Skyhawk up to bat was left fielder Alexa Adinolfi, who hit a single up the middle of the field but was left on base at the end of the inning.
  • In the bottom of the second inning, the Skyhawks played the field, where Nevada attempted to steal third base, but was caught by catcher Isabella Therrien, where she threw to shortstop Emily Nardelli who was covering third, tagging Nevada out.
  • Throughout the game, pitcher Skylar Brandemarte had a solid performance, throwing 81 strikes out of 129 pitches.

Stonehill is on the field again tomorrow, March 5th at 12:30 p.m. for the final day of the FIU Classic Tournament in Miami, Florida, hosted by Florida International University, against the host FIU. Next, the Skyhawks stick around in Florida and travel to Florida Atlantic University for a doubleheader on March 7th in Boca Raton at 4 p.m. & 6 p.m., then another doubleheader on March 8th against Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers at 5 p.m. & 7:30 p.m.
