Softball Clinches Game Two of Doubleheader at URI

KINGSTON, Rhode Island (April 12, 2023)- Today, the Stonehill College softball team traveled to Kingston, Rhode Island for a non-conference doubleheader against the University of Rhode Island. The Skyhawks battled till the end, losing the first game 3-4, but returning in the second game with a 1-0 win.

Game 1: The Skyhawks put up a good fight in the first game, staying close with URI throughout the game, but falling short with a 3-4 loss.

Key Moments:                           

  • With the game staying scoreless in the beginning for both teams, in the top of the fifth inning, left fielder Alexa Adinolfi singled to left center, followed by a SAC bunt from second basemen Courtney Brochuand pinch runner Katelin Pricestepping in for Adinolfi.
  • First basemen Alyssa Grossi stepped up to the plate, smacking a double down the left field line, sending Price home to tie the score 1-1 in the top of the fifth inning.
  • Next, catcher Isabella Therrien was up to bat in the top of the sixth inning, with pinch-runner Maeve Proulx on second and center fielder Natalie Bottiglieri on third, Therrien singled with a bunt, advancing to second on the throw from URI, and sending Bottiglieri home to put the Skyhawks ahead 2-1.
  • Going into extra innings, in the top of the eighth inning, third basemen Shannon Conte was up to bat, with right fielder Megan Weis on third, Conte grounded out to the second base, advancing Stonehill to a 3-2 lead.
  • Throwing a solid game was pitcher Skylar Brandemarte, who threw three '3 up, 3 down' innings, 74 strikes, and two strikeouts.

Game 2: The Skyhawks played their second game of the day right after, taking the lead and finishing with a 1-0 win.

Standout Performances:

Key Moments:                           

  • Starting early, the Skyhawks had Grossi on first from a walk, and Weis up to bat, where she sent a far ball right field, hitting a triple, sending Grossi home, and earning an RBI, leaving the Skyhawks up by 1-0 for the remainder of the game.
  • In the bottom of the fourth inning, with URI up to bat, URI grounded out to second, with second basemen Brochu tagging at second and then throwing to first basemen Wodarski for a double play, ending the inning.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, with the Skyhawks taking the field, the URI batter flew out to left fielder Adinolfi, who caught the out and threw a long ball to catcher Therrien, tagging the URI runner on third out to stop them from scoring.
  • Pitcher Kelly Mayette pitched a good game, throwing a strikeout, 50 strikes, and having a single '3 up, 3 down' inning.
