Skyhawk Softball Finish Doubleheader Versus Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, New York (March 26, 2023)- Today, the Stonehill College softball team hit the road for Staten Island, New York to play in a doubleheader against Wagner College at Lower Field Softball Field. This was the Skyhawks' second Northeast Conference competition of the season, where the Skyhawks put up a great effort, scoring two runs in the first game and five in the second.

GAME 1: In the first game against Wagner, the Skyhawks put up two runs, but ended with a loss of 2-3.

Standout Performances:

Key Moments:

  • Starting the Skyhawks off strong in the top of the first inning, first basemen Paige Wodarski smacked a far ball to centerfield for a homerun, earning an RBI and giving the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead.
  • In the top of the third inning, with Wodarski on first, third basemen Shannon Conte hit a double to center field, advancing Wodarski to third.
  • Stepping up to the plate after Conte, DP Isabella Therrien reached first on a fielder's choice, allowing Wodarski to advance to home and earn an RBI, giving the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead.
  • Pitcher Skylar Brandemarte pitched a solid game, throwing 18 strikes out of 23 pitches with three strikeouts.

GAME 2: In the second game against Wagner, the Skyhawks weren't able to grab the win, losing by a score of 5-9.

Standout Performances:

Key Moments:

  • In the top of the first inning, with Conte and Wodarski on third and first, Therrien was able to hit a single to right field, advancing Wodarski to second and Conte home to give the Skyhawks a 1-0 lead.
  • Still in the first inning, first basemen Alyssa Grossi was on first, Therrien on second, and Wodarski on third, the Skyhawk's second basemen Courtney Brochu stepped up to the plate and was walked. advancing the Skyhawks around the bases with Wodarski scoring, giving the Skyhawks a 2-0 lead.
  • After that, centerfielder Natalie Bottiglieri singled to right center, sending Therrien and Grossi to home plate, earning two RBIs and giving the Skyhawks a 4-0 lead after the first inning.
  • In the top of the fourth inning, with Brochu on first, Grossi on second, and Therrien on third, Bottiglieri was walked and earned an RBI after stepping up to the plate, sending Therrien home to give the Skyhawks a 5-4 lead.

Stonehill is on the field again tomorrow, Monday, March 27th against Wagner College on Saturday, March 25th for the last game of the weekend series at 11 a.m. in Staten Island, New York. Then, the Skyhawks will host their first home doubleheader match-up of the season against the College of the Holy Cross on Wednesday, March 29th at 2 p.m. & 4:30 p.m.
