Skyhawks Softball Falls to Northern Colorado and UCSD on Day 2 of La Jolla Invitational

LA JOLLA, Calif. (February 11, 2023)- The Stonehill College softball team finished the second day of the La Jolla Invitational in La Jolla, California, where the team competed against two teams. They started the tournament with a game against the University of Northern Colorado, where the team had a tough loss of 7-0.

 
 
 

Standout Performances:

Skylar Brandemarte: 2 Strikeouts

Maeve Proulx: 1 Hit

Courtney Brochu: 1 Hit

Key Moments:

  • Pinch hitter Maeve Proulx hit a single to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning, getting to first base, before Stonehill earned their third out.
  • Second Base Courtney Brochu was able to snag a hit in the bottom of the seventh inning, making it to first base for the Skyhawks.
  • Pitcher Kelly Mayette faced 26 batters, pitching 79 pitches and 52 strikes, and throwing two strikeouts, as well as Lauren Donavan who pitched 47 pitches and 33 strikes, including a strikeout.
  • As the game progressed, Northern Colorado ended up grabbing seven runs during the game, including a single to left field by Barashkoff in the first inning, earning two RBI's and Gandert hitting a double to right center, also grabbing two RBIs.

Pitching Records:

In Stonehill College softball's second game of day two of their California trip, the Skyhawks fell to UC San Diego again by a score of 0-8 later that afternoon at the Triton Softball Field.

Chloe Kelly: 2 Hits

Caroline Green: 1 Hit

Key Moments:

  • Centerfielder Chloe Kelly was up to bat in the top of the first inning, hitting a single to left field, and landing on first, but was thrown out shortly after at first base. 
  • In the top of the sixth, Kelly was walked to first, making it to second before the end of the inning
  • Infielder Caroline Green was up to bat in the top of the sixth inning, singling through the right side, where Emily Nardelli took over to pinch run.
  • Shortly after, still in the top of the sixth inning, Chloe Kelly singled out to first base, advancing shortstop/pinch runner Emily Nardelli to third base, before the Skyhawks earned their third and final out of the game.
  • Pitcher Kelly Mayette pitched the first part of the game, throwing 64 pitches and 28 strikes, as well as pitcher Skylar Brandemarte pitched the second part of the game, throwing 23 pitches, 18 strikes, and two strikeouts.
  • As the game moved along, San Diego made eight runs during their at-bats, earning a single run in the bottom of the first and the bottom of the second, two runs in the bottom of the third, and three runs in the bottom of the sixth. The team earned multiple RBIs and stolen bases, grabbing the lead early and finishing off strong.
