Baseball Walks Off Twice Against Saint Anselm

Tyman threw 5.0 innings, striking out career best 8 batters

EASTON, Massachusetts (May 2, 2021) – The Stonehill College baseball team (15-12, 10-10 NE10) walked off twice against Saint Anselm College (10-16, 5-14 NE10) in their final home regular season doubleheader Sunday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference play on Lou Gorman Field.  

Game 1: Stonehill 10 – Saint Anselm 9

Key Moments:

Saint Anselm put up three runs in the top of the third on three hits, including a three-run homerun over the right field fence from Mike Borrelli, 3-0. With two outs and runners in scoring position, Borrelli connected again for a two-run single to left field extending the Hawks lead to five, 5-0, in the top of the third.

The Skyhawks chased five runs heading into the bottom of the third, as they tallied six hits that resulted in six runs to take the lead, 6-5. Maher kicked off the offense with a lead off double and soon after he would score on an RBI single from Blaine Lidsky. Noah Lucier followed that up with his own RBI single and the Hawks got the second out on Ciulla-Hall's two-run double, as Herrick was thrown out at home. Farragher and Duarte connected for their own RBI singles, until Saint Anselm retired the side with the final out.

Billy Duff saw his first of three strikeouts in the top of the fifth for the first out, but then Mike Pierro singled and Kyle Maurice crushed a pitch over the center field wall to take the lead, 7-6. Stonehill responded in the bottom of the frame as Duarte tallied his sixth double of the season, sending Farragher home from first to tie the game, 7-7.

In the top of the seventh with one out, Maurice sent out his second homerun of the game putting the Hawks up one, 8-7, and Borrelli scored from second on Dan Baker's single to left center to put Saint Anselm up two, 9-7. With one final chance for the Skyhawks and a runner on third with two outs, Farragher singled to left field to cut the deficit to one, 9-8. Duarte singled to put runners on first and second, and Maher punched the ball down the right field line to bring home both runs for the game-winning hit, 10-9.

Key Moments:

Saint Anselm put up two runs on two hits in the top of the first, as Stonehill responded right away with two runs of their own scoring on a Lucier single to right center and Graham Herrick's single to the second baseman, 2-2.

The Hawks saw their second lead of the game with three runs in the top of the second, 5-2, as they loaded the bases twice. Stonehill's three-run bottom of the third was its biggest of the game to tie the score for the second time. Lucier tripled to lead off and came across home on Ciulla-Hall's single through the left side. Farragher and Maher both singled driving in a run, before the Hawks retired the side.

Six runs in the top of the fourth, broke open the game for Saint Anselm for an 11-5 lead and Stonehill's Tyman came in in the top of the fifth and struck out a career-best eight through eight innings. The Skyhawks cut the deficit to four, 11-7, with a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings.

Stonehill fought back in the remaining innings, tying the game for the third time, 11-11, after scoring two runs in the eighth and ninth. One of the four runs included Farragher's first homerun of the season. The Skyhawks retired the side in the top of the 10th as Silverman flew out to center field and Collins grounded into a double play to end the inning.

In the bottom of the frame with two outs and runners in scoring position, Lucier hit the ball to shortstop, who was positioned deep and Lidsky crossed home for the winning run, 12-11.
