Franklin Pierce Edges Baseball, 7-1 & 7-6

RINDGE, New Hampshire (April 25, 2021) – The Stonehill College baseball team (11-12, 6-10 NE10) fell twice to Northeast-10 Conference foe Franklin Pierce University (12-4, 9-3 NE10) Sunday afternoon with scores of 7-1 and 7-6.

The Stonehill College baseball team is ranked No. 3 in the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) week three rankings.

Game 1: Stonehill 1 – Franklin Pierce 7

With one out in the top of the second, Herrick singled down the third base line and Ciulla-Hall drove him in with his first-career double, putting Stonehill up, 1-0.

The bottom of the third was one of Franklin Pierce's three-run innings, where they took the lead, 3-1, on three hits and an error. The Ravens had runners on first and second, and Ian Battipagl dropped a sacrifice bunt that moved the runners around for the first run. Jonel Ozuna then reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, as Battipagl and Randy Flores crossed home.

Stonehill held Franklin Pierce to one run in the bottom of the fourth as Flores scored on a wild pitch, 4-1. The bottom of the fifth was the Ravens' second three-run inning, where Dylan Jones kicked it off with a solo homerun to left field and Graham Smith moved the runners over on a sacrifice bunt, including scoring James Boria. Joel Lara then singled on a bunt and Jake Miller scored for the third run of the inning. Stonehill saw one hit in each of the innings, except the third, as Franklin Pierce took game one, 7-1.

Game 2: Stonehill 6 – Franklin Pierce 7

Stonehill went to work early as they put up two runs in the top of the first, with Kiely leading off the inning with a single, and Orzechowski doubling down the left field line. Roberti grounded out to third, bringing home Kiely for the first run, and then Orzechowski later scored on a wild pitch, 2-0.

Franklin Pierce saw their first hit in the bottom of the frame, but they weren't able to put up runs until the bottom of the second when the tied the score, 2-2. The Ravens' scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly knotting the game.

The Skyhawks took the lead back in the top of the third with Orzechowski's second-career homerun that he sent over the left center wall, 3-2. Two innings later, Franklin Pierce put up two more runs for their second lead, 4-3, with Tyler Patane's two-run single to right field.

Stonehill was scoreless for three innings, before Orzechowski's one out double down the left field line, driving home Mike Maher and Farragher, 5-4. Swanholm's RBI single in the top of the eighth gave the Skyhawks their first two-run advantage, 6-4.

After retiring seven-straight batters, Franklin Pierce had one last chance in the bottom of the ninth, and with two outs and the bases loaded, Battipagl singled to right field driving home Jose Savinon and Lara, and then Patane walked off with a RBI ground-rule single putting Flores across home, 7-6.

Stonehill hosts Saint Anselm College (10-11, 5-9 NE10) for their four-game series this weekend, Saturday, May 1 and Sunday May 2. Saturday's games have first pitch scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and the Skyhawks will honor their three seniors prior to the game.
